(Bloomsbury Group, Garsington), Sir Julian Huxley (1887-1975), English biologist, philosopher, educator, and author who greatly influenced the modern development of embryology, systematics, and studies of behaviour and evolution, co founder of WWF and first director general of UNESCO. A visitors book/autograph album containing over 250 autographs spanning the period 1938-1975 including many authors, artists, scientists and other prominent intellectual, social and cultural figures of the 20th Century in the circle of Julian Huxley and his wife Juliette Huxley, Lady Huxley (1896–1994), born Marie Juliette Baillot, the Swiss-French sculptor and writer. Juliette Huxley (née Baillot) met Lady Ottoline Morrell at Oxford Railway Station during the First World War to be interviewed for the position of governess to the family. This led to her introduction to the exotic and stimulating world of Garsington Manor, Oxfordshire, where she met all the Bloomsbury characters, including Bertrand Russell, Lytton Strachey, the painter Mark Gertler and the Huxley brothers Aldous, and Julian whom she later married. Signatures include H.G. Wells (1866-1946), who co-authored the book 'The Science of Life', 1929-30, with Julian Huxley and G.P. Wells; Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), writer and philosopher, brother of Julian Huxley; Freya Stark (1893-1993), explorer and travel writer known to have corresponded with Juliette Huxley (3 separate signatures on different leaves of album); Henry Moore (1898-1986), artist and sculptor, known to have corresponded with Juliette Huxley and was the recipient of an elephant skull as a gift from her in 1966; Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), mathematician, philosopher and public intellectual, contemporary of Julian Huxley and fellow atheist, known to have corresponded with Juliette Huxley (2 separate signatures on different leaves); May Sarton (1912-1995), poet & novelist, who had affairs with both Julian and Juliette Huxley, with Julian in 1936, of which Juliette was aware of, and with Juliette a romance over time, a relationship Julian was not aware of. Juliette broke this off during a week they spent together in Paris in 1948 because of Sarton's threat to tell Julian. After his death they resumed their correspondence. Sarton's letters to and from Juliette, whom she described as the incomparable one, were published in 1999 (2 separate signatures on different leaves); S.S. Koteliansky (1880-1955), Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English, great friend of D.H. Lawrence, and Leonard and Virginia Woolf; Stephen Spender (1909-1995), poet & novelist, old friend of Julian Huxley from Oxford University (3 separate signatures on different leaves); Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), artist, graphic designer, illustrator; Marion Dorn (1896-1964), textile designer, wife of E. McKnight Kauffer; Clare Leighton (15898-1989), artist, writer, illustrator; Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999), violinist and conductor; Nettie Huxley Roller (singer); Michael Huxley (1899-1979), foreign office; David Huxley; Sthephen L. Medvedev (1925-2018), Russian agronomist, biologist, historian and dissident; plus many others signatures. Juliette Huxley accompanied her husband throughout his career and travelled extensively. In 1963 she published Wild Lives of Africa based on these travels. The album appears to reflect the Huxley's travels, with some of the autographs throughout dated and stating places (in many instances presumably the place where signed, in some instances perhaps the home address of the signer). The first entry in the album by Samuel Eliot Morison dated June 23, 1938, a signature by Yvonne Russell dated November 9th 1938 stating "Kampala, Uganda", the Huxley's visited East Africa many times during the 1930's. The section of the album with signatures covering the period 1947/1948 is headed "Paris", includes several French nationals signatures, one page in this section also headed "17 bis Avenue Foch", one of the signatures of May Sarton is also in this section, this all seems to coincide with Julian Huxley's UNESCO years and the Huxley's years in Paris. The album with 30 pages of manuscript signatures (over 250 signatures in total), and largely in chronological order, majority of entries/sigs in the 1930's and 1940's, appears to be no entries in the 1950's, and entries/sigs fewer in the 1960's/70's than earlier in the album, the final signature being Victoria Ocampo, 9.3.75, the only entry after the date Julian Huxley died (14/2/75). Contemporary decorative floral cloth covered boards (approx 29 x 26cm). A unique and fascinating album of autographs of the circle of eminent friends, family and associates of Julian and Juliette Huxley

A rare mid 19th century 19th Century carved mahogany floorstanding regulator with keyless windingE. Fisher, BathThe arched case with full length glazed door revealing the mercury jar pendulum (now empty) and floral scroll engraving to the top and bottom, over a substantial base with recessed oval panel, applied carved scrolls and block feet. The one piece signed silvered 13.75-inch dial with outer minute track enclosing the recessed subsidiary dials for Arabic seconds (with Observatory marks) and Roman hours. The substantial weight-driven movement with thick (5mm) tapering plates united by four heavy turned pillars secured by eight heavy blued steel screws and collets, the single train with wheels of six crossings, high count pinions and terminating in a deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, triple-screwed to the arbor which is set in endstops, the long polished steel crutch terminating in a right angle with hinged steel arbor carrying the fork to the fine-screw regulation nut over the empty mercury jar pendulum with tapered pointer reading against a silvered beat scale secured to the back board. Wound by pulling on a heavy fusee-type chain emanating from the right hand side of the hood. Together with the small (c.2.75kgs) cylindrical brass weight, the four-spoke pulley and case key. 2.18m (7ft 2ins)Footnotes:Edwin Fisher is first recorded working in Bath in 1819; he is recorded as a watchmaker and a jeweller working at 13 Somerset buildings. At some point he relocated to 14 New Bond Street; an 1833 directory records him at this address. On a trade card, he is styled as a watchmaker, specialising in French watches, chronometers, and repeaters, as well as carrying out repairs to musical works and offering a supply of keys and precious metal chains. Nine years later he had moved again, to 13 Abbey Churchyard, though he would stay here only briefly, moving to his final location, 9 Old Bond Street, in 1846. He stopped advertising in Bath in 1866, which is reasonable to suggest as his date of retirement.Another regulator, with a jewelled deadbeat escapement, is known by him, as well as a few skeleton clocks. His name and a date of 1839 are also on the hour dial of the Cockshutt church clock; it has been suggested that he carried out some extensive repairs to the clock, possibly including a repair or conversion of the clock's pinwheel escapement, the movement being signed Bullock and Davies of Ellesmere. A turret clock, previously from the Bishop's Palace stable block in Bath, was made entirely by Fisher, and features quarter chimes and a wooden pendulum. None of these clocks have been described as having the peculiar pull-wind system present on the current lot.It is also interesting to note that the ticking of a balloon clock made by Fisher was recorded around 1941, by the BBC at Maida Vale. The recorded ticking was used as a time interval signal on radio broadcasts between programs, to assure listens that their sets had not died, but that a new program was being prepared.British Horological Society (1972) 'A Working Edwin Fisher Clock', Horological Journal, Vol. 115 (3), pg. 29Goodship, G. WARHOL, ANDY1928 Pittsburgh, PA/USA - 1987 New YorkTitel: Flash - November 22. Untertitel: 11-teiliges Portfolio. Datierung: 1963-1968. Technik: Farbserigrafien auf leichtem Karton. Blattmaß: 53,5 x 53,5cm Bezeichnung: Jeweils signiert und nummeriert. Herausgeber: Racolin Press, Inc., Briarcliff Manor/New York (Hrsg.). Exemplar: 132/200.

MOUNTBATTEN LOUIS: (1900-1979) British Admiral of World War II, later serving as the last Viceroy of India of British India (1947) and as the first Governor-General of the Dominion of India (1947-48). T.L.S., Mountbatten of Burma, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, small 4to, Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire, 3rd March 1966, to Michael Harrison. Mountbatten thanks his correspondent for their letter and adds that [Graham] Clifford has informed him that they had met 'and had been most stimulated by your conversation', also remarking that Clifford is currently on a world tour on behalf of the Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers and also the National Electronic Research Council and that 'I shall be meeting him in Canada in April when we shall have a chance of talking over your letter'. Mountbatten further writes 'I see from your letter that you wrote the English version of the pamphlet you enclosed. I am astonished to note that no effort has been made to translate your English into French, for the French version appears to be entirely different in layout and phrases. I also regret to see that no attempt has been made to produce the diagrammatic figures with French titling in the French text. In fact anybody who understands both languages would be thoroughly lost trying to compare one version with the other. I wonder what the explanation is.' Accompanied by the original envelope. VG Michael Harrison (1907-1991) Maurice Desmond Rohan. English detective fiction and fantasy author, a noted Sherlock Holmes scholar.

Dance, little man!/ Dance wherever you can!'. An appealing signed image enhanced by Gershwin's addition of a quotation. A few very minor, light corner creases, otherwise VG The song Shall We Dance, composed by George Gershwin and with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, was written in 1937 for the RKO Radio Pictures musical comedy film of the same name which starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. ‘….your small investment in me has paid off already, I’m sure. And will continue to pay’RAY MAN: (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer. T.L.S., Man Ray, one page, 4to, Paris, 31st January 1962, to Jean. Ray writes in a business-like manner regarding the sales of his works, apologising for writing in English ('in which language I can express myself more shortly') and referring to an agreement he had entered into with his correspondent in 1959, which had led him 'to believe that I would be freed from all matters of keeping accounts and from endless discussions', continuing to rectify several points raised in his correspondent's recent letters, in part, 'Our contract gives you control of world sales, and the exhibitions in New York were arranged with the approval of the Galerie Rive Droite….To date no accounts have been given me of transactions….Among other activities in New York I was responsible for selling a watercolour for $400, as well as some drawings at a good price….In your second letter you say you haven't taken paintings to cover the contract. I have receipts for all the works you have taken which exceed what you have paid me. You admit you haven't paid me the four millions due in 1961. The contract stipulates three millions to be paid over the period…..I cannot go into details here, since you promised to keep accounts for me. Anyhow, your small investment in me has paid off already, I'm sure. And will continue to pay. I have done much more than you in the way of publicity: interviews, radio and television in France and abroad, as well as participating in non-commercial official exhibitions. In 59, before our contract I consigned only the Orateur to Loeb, asking him only 300.00 francs for it. He did not sell it because he probably asked a couple of thousand dollars for it, and I took it back. I sold it to you for 200.00 frs. as an object, although I have always considered it as important as any painting. But I wasn't going to argue with you - I counted on the future. So, the contract is void as from today.' A couple of very light, extremely minor corner creases, VG

ROLLAND ROMAIN: (1866-1944) French Dramatist & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1915. A.L.S., Romain Rolland, two pages, written to the first and third page, 8vo, Villeneuve - Vaud, 7th February 1937, to Carlos Larronde, in French. Rolland makes some clarifications regarding his work Le Théâtre de la Revolution, stating in part `Voici les quelques lignes que vous me demandez. Here are the few lines that you ask me. If they bother you a little in your presentation, cut what bothers you! The main thing is that it be said that my cycle of the Revolution includes 7 written plays - and not three, as has been repeated in the newspapers, relying on the title, Theatre of the Revolution, applied, in the editions Albin Michel, to only three plays: 14th July, The Wolves, Danton.
