Christmas Card from Iva Toguri “Orphan Ann – Tokyo Rose”, the card with scene of Japanese boat on river with trees in the background. Printed message to the inside of the card and ink signature.Iva Toguri was a Japanese-American, who was visiting a sick relative in Japan when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. She was unable to return to America. She was instructed by the Japanese government to renounce her American citizenship which she refused to do. She got the name Tokyo Rose, when she was forced to make propaganda radio broadcasts on Radio Tokyo. This station was picked up by allied troops serving in the Pacific. Her show was called “The Zero Hour”. At the end of the war, she was detained after the Japanese surrender in 1945 on suspicion of treason, but was released without charge after a year. On her attempt to return to the USA, she was again arrested and tried, this time she was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which she served six years. She was eventually given a presidential pardon in 1977 by President Gerald Ford.

Lot also contains a typed letter dated 19th September 1945 confirming the ward of the D.S.M. to Albert Phillips and 3 photo postcards, 1 of which depicts HMS Malaya, 2 others showing unidentified ships at sea. D.S.M. London Gazette 4th September 1945 – “For gallantry and devotion to duty in HM Submarine Terrapin during three patrols in Far Eastern waters when fourteen enemy vessels were destroyed. In her last patrol HMS Terrapin was severely damaged by depth charges in very shallow water and was forced to surface, but succeeded in eluding the enemy by night.” HMS Terrapin was one of the last T-class submarines built during the Second World War being commissioned in January 1944. In March 1944 she attacked a German convoy off the coast of Norway damaging 2 vessels and in April that year she was assigned to the Far East initially based in Sri Lanka before moving to Freemantle, Australia. Her first patrol from Freemantle (her 7th war patrol in total) started in 11th May 1945 and saw her deployed to the Java Sea. 4 days into the patrol she grounded herself for several hours but eventually managed to break free and on the 19th May she launch an unsuccessful attack on a Japanese tanker with 2 armed escort vessels. The 3 torpedoes missed their target but were seen by the enemy and the 2 escort vessels commenced depth charge attacks on the submarine. Terrapin decided to go deep to avoid the attacks but struck the seabed at a depth of 57 feet (the charts indicating a depth of 150 feet!), the submarine stayed on the seabed throughout the attacks with significant damage being caused to the pressure hull from close explosions, 1 depth charge actually struck the hull of the vessel, rolled down the side but failed to explode. The vessel eventually surfaced at 8pm after her attackers had left but her radio had been damaged beyond repair so she was unable to let anyone know her situation. The only option was to try to make it back to Freemantle and by chance she encountered the U.S. Submarine U.S.S. Cavalla on the 21st May. The Cavalla escorted the damaged Terrapin back to Freemantle with both vessels arriving back at the port on 27th May. A total of 13 awards were made to the 61 crew of Terrapin for this patrol including 4 Distinguished Service medals. Albert Phillips from Leyton, Essex, received his medal at an investiture on 30th October 1945.
