ROOSEVELT ELEANOR: (1884-1962) American Political Leader, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt. First Lady of the United States 1933-45. T.L.S., Eleanor Roosevelt, with several holograph corrections, two pages, 4to, Columbus, Ohio, 29th October 1939, to Miss. von Hesse, on the attractive printed stationery of the Deshler-Wallick Hotel. Roosevelt states that she enjoyed her correspondent's visit and remarks 'The things you are doing for Florida is a grand piece of work, and I like your notes on the radio program very much', continuing to add that she would like to write a piece in her column about it, if von Hesse doesn't feel it would harmful, and also writing 'You have prepared yourself so well for this, and it seems to me that you might get a good clientele from different parts of the country where they will want to advertise some special event. For instance, New Mexico and Arizona are celebrating the four hundredth year of their founding in 1940, and it seems to me that they could do nothing better than to have a radio program about it in order to acquaint the country with what they have to offer of real interest. I think the San Francisco Fair could have done a much better advertising job. Perhaps if you could look around, you could find places where local things are happening which should be of nation wide interest and get the people to sponsor a program. You might build up a very valuable piece of work besides earning a living, doing something which would be intensely interesting'. Roosevelt further asks her correspondent if they can assist in finding a simple house to rent for a month and discussing her requirements, 'I would like it on some beach in south east Florida where it would be warm and sunny. I would not want it in a row near too many neighbours……If there was a maid who went with the house, that would be grand, otherwise it would have to be near a restaurant' and concludes by remarking 'Remember me to your mother and tell her I am apparently doing well with her instructions, because my audiences are good on this trip'. One very slight, minor paperclip rust stain to the upper left corner of the first page, otherwise VGRoosevelt's correspondent was evidently the daughter of Elizabeth von Hesse, the First Lady's speech teacher who had helped her to lower her voice and improve her tone and resonance. Between 1935 and 1941 Eleanor Roosevelt travelled America for the W. Colston Leigh Bureau of Lectures and Entertainments, giving over 700 paid lectures.

An H.R. Giger-designed special effects mechanical alien head from the production of Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror Alien. The Alien stalked the crew of the Nostromo, picking them off one by one after bursting through the chest of executive officer Kane (John Hurt). This head was constructed for the production by David Watling, who also previously worked on the mechanical R2-D2 unit on Star Wars. Although Carlo Rambaldi was commissioned to make three mechanical alien heads, he was busy working on another film at the time, so Watling was asked to construct a back-up in case Rambaldi's were delayed or below par. Watling's head was intended to be operated via a radio-control system, whereas Rambaldi's was operated using hand levers. The head was based on H.R. Giger's iconic design and, judging by the piece's airbrushed paintwork, it was also likely to have been hand-painted and finished by Giger himself. Ultimately, Rambaldi delivered his three Alien heads on time as promised, and Watling's, though well documented in numerous interviews about it being built for production, was never used on camera. The head is largely made of resin and fibreglass, and has a moveable jaw and toothed 'tongue' that can protrude from the mouth. The front of the head is shaped like a human skull, as per Giger's original design, with resin teeth that are plated to look metallic. The back of the head is missing, with cables protruding, revealing where the controls were attached to manipulate the mouth. A headcap is fitted within, allowing the head to be comfortably worn by the Alien performer. The head shows wear from production use and age. The jaw and 'tongue' are both mounted on a slide mechanism, with the chrome plated teeth on the tongue spring loaded and mechanised. There are cracks and small holes in the resin, most notably on the left side. Some of the paintwork has chipped away, most clearly on the teeth. Dimensions: 83 cm x 22 cm x 36 cm (32 3/4" x 8 3/4" x 14 1/4") Special shipping required; see special shipping notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: £40,000 - 60,000 M
A BBC Exhibition Dalek from the promotion of the revived BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who. This version of the iconic alien was created for the BBC by Specialist Models, who were contracted to build two new models at the end of 2004. The outer shell of this Dalek was originally gold-coloured, and was subsequently refurbished and repainted black for the Doctor Who Up Close exhibition, held in several locations across the UK.The full-size model is constructed from a combination of cast resin and fibreglass, with grill detailing around the neck and hemispheres on the skirt. The body is predominantly black with a silver-coloured metal eye stalk, gun stick and an extendable plunger rod. A small switch is present on the rear of the dome that controls the eye stalk's blue light, and the two dome lights illuminate when the switch of its cabelled hand controller is pressed. The lights are powered by a 12v battery within the neck cage. The model is accompanied by an additional functional remote control box (powered by 8 AA batteries) and power unit, used to control the dome section's rotation, which was achieved via radio control servos. The Dalek displays scuffing on the base from previous handling and there is notable scratching and paint wear on the right side of the body, revealing the original gold-coloured paint. Dimensions: 125 cm x 95 cm x 165 cm (49 1/4" x 37 1/2" x 65")Contains electronics: see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see special shipping notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: £7,000 - 9,000 M
