Theatrical Interest. Photographs and ephemera relating to early 20 th Century Canadian stage, film and radio actress Florence McHugh comprising three framed press photographs of the actress in 'Showboat' etc (Qty). Florence McHugh studied voice and piano at the Royal College of Music in the early 1920s. Afterwards she became successful on the British stage, appearing with Sybill Thorndyke in "Granite", and playing Hilda Wangel in Ibsen's "Master Builder". In 1929 she portrayed Magnolia, the showboat owner's daughter, in the musical "Showboat" as it toured the UK. The "Glasgow Citizen" wrote of her: " She can sing, she can dance, and what is more important, she can act, infusing her work with real pathos and passion". In 1931 she starred in the motion picture "Romany Love".

A good Autograph Statement Signed, Jagadis Chandra Bose, on an oblong 12mo card, Bose Institute, Calcutta, 25th June n.y. (1925). In bold dark fountain pen ink, Bose has penned 'The little we can see is as nothing compared with the vastness we can not. But out of the very imperfection of his senses, man has built himself a raft of thought for making daring adventures in seas unknown'. Scarce. VG. £200-300

In bold, dark fountain pen ink Forest has penned, in full, 'Radio Broadcasting will make people happier through its entertainment utility, healthier through its spread of information and better through its power to promote understanding'. SANGER FREDERICK: (1918-2013) British Biochemist, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1958 & 1980. A single page of original MS, signed F Sanger at the head, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. In predominantly black and some blue inks Sanger writes the text of a lecture (?), in part, '….The whole paper was then to be subjected to the Edman procedure, washed to remove the phenythiohydantoin and another radiograph prepared. The N-terminal residue of each peptide should then be identified as the hand missing or being much weaker in the second radio autograph. By doing further Edman degradations on the paper further sequences of the individuals peptides were to be determined. The idea was certainly a rather wild one and didn't show much signs of working. One wonders if I was However if it had worked it would have been exciting and could could have represented an alternative to the standard hydrolysis approach, which might have been more rapid & simple to carry out. TURINA JOAQUIN: (1882-1949) Spanish Composer. A.M.Q.S., Joaquin Turina, one page, oblong 12mo (manuscript paper), n.p. (Madrid?), December 1931. In dark ink Turina has penned a four bar quotation on two staves, which he identifies as being from his suite op.62, ´Radio Madrid´, also adding a dynamic ´Lentamente´. Together with an A.L.S., Joaquin Turina, one page, oblong 8vo, Madrid, 20th December 1927, to Mr. Dandelot, in French. Turina reminds his correspondent of the promise of a concert including his works, and states ´Last month of July I had the opportunity to talk to you regarding a concert in Paris (may be also in Brussels) playing my works. You did ask me some time to think about it. But as I will probably be next week in Paris, I write to you these lines to recall your promise...´ VG, 2. £200-300 Arthur Dandelot (1864-1943) French Musical Critic. AVIATION: A printed 8vo souvenir programme for Championnat de Cocktails des Artistes de Paris, at Luna Park, 21st June 1929, the French text relating a Cocktail Championship and featuring a list of participants, prizes, voting slip, invitation card etc., signed to the printed cover by three French aviators individually, comprising Jean Assollant (1905-1942) French Pioneer Aviator, famous for his 1929 flight in the L'Oiseau Canari, representing the first French crossing of the North Atlantic; Rene Lefebvre (1903-1972) French Pioneer Aviator, a pilot on the L'Oiseau Canari; and Armand Lotti (1897-1993) French Pioneer Aviator, radio operator on the L'Oiseau Canari. All have signed in pencil with their names alone, largely to clear areas. Annotated in ink in another hand to the right margin. The programme has been attractively bound in green half morocco and marbled boards with a gilt stamped title to the spine. About VG L'Oiseau Canari (the Canary Bird) made the first French non-stop crossing of the North Atlantic in the west - east direction, America to Spain, in June 1929. Its three man crew comprised Assollant, Lefebvre and Lotti.
