CHAVEZ HUGO: (1954-2013) President of Venezuela 1999-2013. T.L.S., Chavez, four pages, 4to, Yare, 25th December 1992, to Rear-Admiral Hernan Gruber Odreman, on his personal printed stationery, bearing a colourful monogramme of his clandestine Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200, MBR-200, in Spanish. A very important and lengthy letter with historical content, related to the coup attempts of 4th February 1992 leaded by Chavez and the November 1992 leaded by his correspondent, and to prompt future plans of overthrowing the government. Chavez refers throughout his letter to each coup as “4F” and “27N”. Chavez signs at the foot in his capacity as Commandant of the MBR-200. Chavez starts stating `A month after the Patriotic Journeys which you commanded on 27N…it is a honour to write to you, Commandant of the Libertarian Troops…before the harsh and coward assault of a dying and rotten regime….I pray to God to make this letter helps to clarify dark matters, without intermediaries, and get the necessary rapprochement between men following the Simon (Bolivar) libertarian trace.´ , he further starts proposing a joint collaboration `I am sure that with our rapprochement, without intermediaries, we will end being the victims of manipulators politicians who do not care at all of the brave soldiers and citizens sacrifice. I am sure that such manipulation and political interests closed last months all the ways to the civic and military victory.´. Chavez also mentions their readiness to new attempts `Immediately after the 4F our troops started reorganizing the continuation of the fight.´. Further referring also to a list of high-rank officers who, due to obscure interests, didn´t keep their word and changed their mind regarding their support to the coup and states `We even accepted my military resignation if this helps to topple the political tyrannical regime…But to this jail cell arrived multiple messages alerting me of the obscure intentions of our supposed comrades, even mentioning the shuttle planning of all of us to a Caribbean island once they got the power. Even so, we kept on proposing union between all of us. And this was reinforced when we learned about the conformation of a new commando leaded by yourself and by General Visconti Osorio…And this pushed me to take the decision, even jeopardizing my family and closer friends, to make all necessary to contact you directly´. Regarding his correspondent´s recent coup attempt failure, like his, he states `We received the information on Thursday 26th about the dawn 27N coup. In the midnight we were all uniformed and ready to move to Caracas, to support your move to overthrow the tyrant, or die trying. A new surrender would have been unthinkable to us, and we blindly trust in you and in the General Visconti to take the decision….And what a surprise when the radio announced that a rebel group took over Channel 8, and that they were showing a tape with my image and message. I immediately concluded that something strange was happening, because our supporters were for several months looking for this tape ( one of the two we taped here in Yare in May and June, long before we learned about you and your plans) done for a previous occasion which almost took place…´. Chavez also quotes illustrious writers throughout his letter, including Unamuno, Comte, Don Quixote, and others, and continues reporting about some officers betrayal stating `We should, my Admiral, imitate the Quixote, “with the Politics we butt, Sancho” (or with “the Politicians”). Imitate with sadness, for our dead, for those suffering persecution, exile, prison. With rage. Swearing oath. With songs. Like the Ali ones “Those who die for life, cannot be called dead”, but keep on, keep on, move, advance, with the flags high, because it is not time for recoiling nor to live on legends´. Chavez further refers to a note received from his correspondent and suggests to keep this secure way of communicating, avoiding lawyers, false friends, because `We both have in our soul the heavy and magnificent weight of having initiated something.., something to continue, for the sake of our Homeland. We must avoid that our men and militaries, most of the honest, fall into the claws of the “Napoleonic Eagles, or in the bogged trenches of past extremisms. The effort will be worth.”´. An extremely important content letter, being the first definitive contact between the two leaders of the 4th February and 27th November 1992 coup attempts, with lengthy explanations regarding the reasons of their failures and planning new attempts to overthrow the Venezuelan government. With a staple to the upper left corner, and very small traces of former staples to the left border not affecting the text or signature. VG £800-1200 Chavez was arrested and imprisoned at the Yare prison after his coup attempt on 4th February 1992.  Hernan Gruber Odreman (1940- ) Naval Military Officer and Politician. Later Governor of Caracas. Gruber leaded the coup attempt in November 1992 against the Venezuela Government of Carlos Andrés Perez (1922-2010), President of Venezuela 1974-79 & 1989-93.  Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) Spanish Philosopher and writer.  Auguste Comte (1798-1857) French Philosopher. Founder of the discipline of sociology and of the doctrine of positivism.  Don Quixote de la Mancha is the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) Spanish writer. And Sancho is the shield bearer of Don Quixote in the novel.
