Provenance: from the Collection of Peter and Margarethe Braune. FIRST EDITION of the author's definitive work on radioactivity. Dibner Heralds 163; Norman 158; PMM 393: "[In 1903] he also published the above massive volume [i.e. Recherches ...] of some three hundred and sixty pages ... which is his definitive work, containing a chronological narrative of his investigations, his mature conclusions and a bibliography of two hundred and fourteen treatises on radio-activity, dating from his own first paper in 1896."
FLEMING JOHN AMBROSE: (1849-1945) English Electrical Engineer & Physicist who invented the first thermionic valve or vacuum tube and designed the radio transmitter with which the first transatlantic radio transmission was made. A.L.S., J. A. Fleming, two pages, 8vo, University College, Gower Street, London, n.d., to a gentleman. Fleming informs his correspondent that he does not at present know of any opening for him, adding 'If you can make translations from French & German into English you might be of assistance to the Editors of the English technical papers. Just at present however I have no work in which I am desiring assistance'. VG
MARCONI GUGLIELMO: (1874-1937) Italian Inventor, developed a radio telegraph system. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1909. Fine A.L.S, Guglielmo Marconi, four pages, 8vo, Naples, 18th August 1920, to Gigi, in Italian. On his "Yacht Elettra", attractive colour printed stationery, Marconi thanks his friend Gigi for his letter and states in part `..I might have to return to Rome in the next few days, earlier than expected.´ further referring to his yacht and saying `Here in Naples, everybody talks about the "yacht" with telephone and without cable connection.. Hallo(sic) Broomfield Elettra speaking (in English)..´ further again `It is not true that I intend to travel shortly to Spain with Nitty…I intend to make a tour with the children and then return to the Adriatic…Will be in Venice towards 10th-12th September with the yacht.. L´Elettra is always ready to receive your visit. I hope you will be able to join us together with Princess Viggiano..´ The letter bears at the heading an embossed attractive flag. EX The yacht Elettra was bought by Marconi in 1921 and he converted it in a scientific laboratory for his experiments. After Marconi died, the boat was bought by the Italian government and was even used for military purposes during WWII.
TOGURI D'AQUINO IVA: (1916-2006) American Broadcaster who participated in English language propaganda radio broadcasts transmitted by Radio Tokyo during World War II, earning herself the (inaccurate) identity of 'Tokyo Rose'. Signed Season's Greetings card, the folding 8vo card featuring a Japanese inspired colour illustration to the cover. A good signed sepia 8 x 6.5 photograph showing Baldwin seated in a half length pose behind a desk, talking into a large microphone, presumably as he makes a radio broadcast.
