Gerd Schaar WW2 Uboat ace signed 4 x 3 inch b/w photo. born 5th March 1919 - died 24th January 1983, 63, 2 ships sunk Total Tonnage 7: 564 GRT 2 Warships sunk Total Tonnage 604 tons Captain with Crew 37b U-957 / U-2551 attacking Artic Covoys on route to Russia. Awarded the Iron Cross 1940, German Cross in Gold early 1944, for the action detailed below, and Knights Cross in late 1944 for leading an attack on a Russian Radio Station on the Island of Sterligova. At 00. 16hrs on 26th January 1944 U-360 fired and hit Liberty Ship Fort Bellingham with three torpedoes and she fell behind the convoy. Sighted at dawn by U-957 she was finally sunk with a single torpedo at 06. 53. U-957 then surfaced to survey the scene and spotted USS PTC-38, a fast American Torpedo Boat, . They fired upon her with their 20mm AA gun while surfaced and captured two survivors from the Fort Bellingham who had managed to climb aboard. USS PTC-38 had been strapped to the deck of the Liberty Ship Admiral Andrew G Curtin and had floated free when the Liberty Ship had been sunk by U-716 earlier the same day. Good Condition.
