Zeus killed Semele by revealing his true form (a bolt of lightning) and Bacchus came forth from Zeus's thigh. Zeus took the infant who, despite being half mortal, was considered a god. Bacchus represented fertility, wine and hedonism and travelled with his followers of Maenads, Satyrs, and the drunken portly Silenus.Condition Report: Dreweatts have not tested the movement and cannot make any guarantees or comments as to accuracy or if the movement is working we suggest getting the clock appraised by a professional clock restorer prior to use. Movement appears to be just about working but is dirty hence a gentle clean/service is required. As catalogued the mechanism is not original to the dial and case hence the winding hole protrude a little further than normal and the left hand is slightly off-centre in the hole. The movement has not been removed from the case to assess how much alteration has been done to the back of the dial to facilitate fitment of the present movement. The dial enamel has some noticeable chipping and scratching around the right hand winding hole and very light chipping to the edge above the I numeral. The case retains original gilding with overall only light wear however the flat side and rear sections have oxidised/discoloured.Clock has pendulum but no winding key.Please see additional images for visual reference to conditionCondition Report Disclaimer

A late 18th century mahogany-cased eight-day longcase clock: the twelve-inch painted dial with moon phase, Latin legend 'Sic est vita hominis', Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds-hand and signed 'A Crawford, Whitby' and cornered by spandrels as painted roses. The dial flanked by a pair of Corinthian columns with brass acanthus capitals. The main trunk with dentil cornice, shaped figured mahogany door and raised on short bracket feet. Together with weights, pendulum, key and some small pieces of wood now away. (207 cm high)Condition Report: It appears to a 'marriage' and the movement is not originally attached to the case. It has two splits to the right-hand side (looking from the front) on the wood above and below the glass. The dial has crazing to the paint surface, the top of the right-hand acanthus capital there is some wood away and some damage to the open fretwork, the figured door is nicely coloured and flat. There are pieces of wood away to the decorative arches at the top and the left-hand side. The right-hand returned dentil moulding is away. Two inch veneer away from the lower base section. Some restoration required.

With pendulum.William Crow is recorded as working in the late 19th century as a clock retailer, watchmaker, optician and Jeweller from various London premises including 140 The Grove and 29 West Ham Lane, Stratford, London. Given the size of the case and construction it is possible the clock was commissioned and constructed for use in a large institutional or public building. A George III 8-day oak longcase clock by John Ivison of Carlisle c 1795, with a swans neck pediment and spun brass ball and eagle finial, break arch hood door flanked by two plain pilasters with brass capitals, trunk with full length reeded quarter columns and a long wavy topped door with crossbanding, trunk on a square plinth with canted corners raised on bracket feet, brass break arch dial with a silvered centre and chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals, minute dots and ten minute Arabic's, with subsidiary seconds and calendar dials, matching steel hands and pointers, matching cast brass �border� spandrels and a break arch painted depiction of a blacksmith shoeing a horse, dial pinned directly to a rack striking movement, striking the hours on a cast bell. With weights and pendulum. The Ivison family were prolific family of Cumberland clockmakers recorded as working in Carlisle from 1760-1834, established by H Ivison in 1760 and succeeded by one son and two grandsons all called John, this clock was most probably made by John (II) 1790-1830.Dimensions: Height: 203cm Length/Width: 47cm Depth/Diameter: 24cm
