Eardley Norton: a George III mahogany and brass mounted striking and musical bracket clock, the dial with foliate, scroll and flowerhead spandrels to the silvered roman and arabic chapter ring, the matted centre with date aperture, ornate pierced hands, the arch with silvered subsidiary dials for strike/not strike and chime/not chime and music section for tunes (March, Minuet, Song, Cotillion, March, Dance) centred by a recessed nameplate signed Eardley Norton London 2074, six pillar movement with triple fusee movement and verge escapement, hour strike on bell and music on thirteen bells with fifteen hammers, 5 1/4in. cylinder, two full repeat levers, the backplate engraved with leaves and scrolls around a cartouche signed Eardley Norton London, also numbered 2074 in top right corner, engraved securing brackets, the case with leaf and urn finial on fluted supports (damaged), caddy top flanked by four vase pattern finials, pierced brass foliate fretwork sides with material backing, brass handles, arched glazed front door with fretwork detail, fluted canted corners with brass detail, brass lined plinth base on brass bracket feet, 21in. high (not including detached finial and support). Eardley Norton is listed as working at Clerkenwell between 1762 and 1794. He was a member of the Clockmakers Company and had a reputation for making complex timepieces, sometimes with musical and astronomical movements for the export market. PROVENANCE Purchased by the vendor's grandfather William Strang, 1st Baron Strang (1893-1978) whilst Charge d'affaires at the British Embassy in Moscow 1930-1933. Thence by descent.

A large oak cased bracket clock, the brass roman dial with twin fusee movement striking on a gong, the backplate stamped W. & H. Sch. (Winterhalder & Hofmeier), the balloon-shaped case with acanthus scroll frieze, the plinth base with bun feet, 20in. high. NB By repute ex Royal Arcade, Newcastle. The Royal Arcade was built in 1831 by Richard Grainger and was Newcastle's first shopping arcade. It was demolished in the early 1960's to make way for the Swan House Roundabout.

EARLY 19TH CENTURY WELSH STAINED OAK EIGHT DAY LONG CASE CLOCK by Evan Evans of Newcastle Emlyn, having broken swan neck pediment above arched aperture flanked by reeded corinthium colums, shaped waist door under strap work frieze flanked by quarter reeded pilasters on a panelled base with bracket feet. Face with rolling moon, Roman Numerals, seconds and dial and date aperture, eight day, two train movement striking on one bell. Face 17.5`` x 12.5`` (44cm x 33cm). Clock overall 220cm high approx. Case overall has been heavily varnished and is in poor condition, particularly around the panelled base which is coming apart. The face is original and in reasonable condition. Case requires restoration.

A fine and impressive late Victorian mahogany musical longcase clock the gilt arched dial with silvered Roman chapter ring, subsidiary seconds at noon, matted gilt centre, pierced foliate and dolphin spandrels, chime/silent and Whittington/Westminster chime dials to arch, the eight day movement striking on nine tubular bells, the ornately carved case with arched moulded cornice on pierced foliate scroll canted pilasters, the hood with shaped scroll edge door, fretwork grilles to sides (one a/f), the trunk with glazed scroll astragal door, flanked by spiral reeded, foliate and turned columns, the base with scroll fielded panel enclosing a lion mask, on ogee bracket feet, 94½in. (240cm.) high, 26½in. (67.25cm.) wide.

William Speakman, London, a double basket top three train bracket clock, the ebonised case with 4 turned finials above and repousse gilt metal mounts, the 7inch (18cm) dial with winged mask spandrels, mock pendulum and date aperture, silvered chapter ring, signed to a rectangular brass strip above the dial, having verge escapement, chime silent lever, the well engraved backplate signed `Wm Speakman London`, chiming and quarter repeating on a nest of 5 bells, the upper left backplate corner cut to accommodate the hammers, pierced heart-shaped pallet cock, all upon 4 disc feet. *William Speakman was apprenticed in 1654, and free of the Clockmakers Company in 1661, and Master in 1701 43cm (17in) Condition report: Some alterations / work have taken place on this clock. It has been suggested that the clock may originally have been a simple timepiece, later adapted to a three train movement and dial. The engraving of the signature above the dial is not of the same quality as the backplate signature, and may be later added. The striking and chiming needs some attention, but was working quite recently. The case looks to be old. The clock is therefore being offered `as seen`. Provenance: According to a hand written note, this clock was bought at Sothebys, lot 65, sale 4 October 1968.
