A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded long case clock, the 25cm square enamelled with Roman and Arabic numerals, painted with scrolls to spandrels, twin winding holes, eight day movement, striking on a bell, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, inscribed E. Massey, Newcastle, the hood with square pediment, turned pilasters, shaped door to waist flanked by quarter fluted columns. plinth base, bracket feet, 188cm high **The maker is the well-regarded Edward Massey of Newcastle-under-Lyme born 1740 and was working from 1763 until 1813. Although bankrupted in 1778, he undertook work for Josiah Wedgwood - a Catholic, he belonged to a prolific Staffordshire clock making dynasty, and three of his sons - Edward II, Francis and John also became clockmakers

(36cm) high. * "Britain's Old Clocks, Watches and their Makers" states Kenneth MacLennan at Mary's Buildings, St. Martins, London, 1778-1825. He made a Planetarium for the Royal Institution in 1801.
