Bishop Maidstone An 18th century brass lantern clock with anchor escapement striking the hours on a brass bell enclosed by the open crown dial with Roman chapters enclosing foliate engraved centre inscribed with maker's name pierced scrolling surmounts to front and sides turned columns at angles with urn finials and ball feet hinged sides 37cm high; together with an associated mahogany bracket 64cm high (2) There are Bishops recorded as working in Maidstone circa 1650 (John) 1720 (Martha) and 1733 (John). This clock has repair dates to the rear of the dial for 1768 1814 1821 1831 1835 1867 1880 and 1995. It was purchased from Paul Smith of Nantwich in 1953 for #20.

Paul Garnier A 19th century gilt brass repeating carriage clock and case with chaff-cutter escapement quarter hour striking on two bells the silvered dial with Roman numerals engine turned centre and surround with inscription Paul Garnier in panel gilt brass case with bevelled glass panels turned carrying handle and repeating button front slide up door; in a gilt tooled leather case clock case 14cm high Jean-Paul Garnier was born in 1801 and after his apprenticeship and employment with various clockmakers set up his own business in the Rue Taitbout Paris in 1825. He patented his distinctive chaff-cutter escapement in 1830 which enabled him to make affordable carriage clocks on a scale unknown before that time. This was the beginning of the Parisian carriage clock industry. He received the order 'Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur' from the French government in 1860 nine years before his death.
