The collection took its inspiration from the Roman numerals on the 9 foot tall Atlas Clock, held aloft by a wooden figure of the Greek mythological titan, Atlas. In 1853 Charles Lewis Tiffany commissioned the clock from Henry Frederick Metzier, who mostly made figureheads for ships. This clock has become a symbol of the firm and has stood above the doors of four historic New York City Tiffany & Co. flagships including 550 Broadway, Union Square and 37th Street and now its current home on Fifth Avenue.In 1983, twelve years prior to the jewellery collection however John Loring, Tiffany's design director emeritus, created the first Atlas watch. Ultimately receiving a patent from the US government, this watch launched the fanfare for the Atlas collection and neatly bridged the gap between Tiffany's horological and jewellery savoir-faire.Also see lots 35 and 97

THOMAS GRIGNION LONDON- A GILT BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK IN THE ROCOCO TASTE LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY 3.5" white enamel dial, signed twin fusée movement 36cm high overall, base 24cm wide Provenance: Acquired from Sotheby's, Clocks, 10 May 1990, Lot 324 Condition Report: Movement appears to be early 19th century hence probably later than the case. We have not removed the movement form the case to investigate further. Mechanism is in clean working order; there are spare holes towards the top of the plates suggesting that the movement may well have originally had a verge escapement. The dial has some chipping around the winding holes and some hairline cracking at three o'clock. The hands appear to be replacements. The surround and bezel are of a more copper-gilt tone than the case itself so may be non-original to the case. The case has overall rubbing and oxidation to the gilding otherwise is in sound original condition. The frets appear complete and are of good quality with engraved detail.Clock has pendulum and a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

A GEORGE III ORMOLU AND WHITE MARBLE CLOCK CASE BY MATTHEW BOULTON AND JOHN FOTHERGILL, CIRCA 1771 Formerly with clock or timepiece movement to interior and on figural mounted base, the ovoid body inscribed "Αϊ Αϊ / Ταύ Κυθέρϵιαν /Απώλϵτο /Καλοṡ Ἀδωνιs" above pedestal mounted with a medallion, later plinth 28cm high, base 10.5cm wide Literature: N. Goodison, 'Matthew Boulton's Allegorical Clocks', Connoisseur, February 1973, pp. 106-111. N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, p. 127 and p. 308, plate 44. Condition Report: Good, structurally secure. The lid is removeable and although of roughly the same colour and form- almost certainly a replacement being not quite for the "leaf clasp" form of known examples. The clock mechanism and dial are missing. As per cataloguing plinth is associated with vacant holes visible from previous mount points.
