Dated 1840 AD. A shield-shaped escutcheon or insert with engraved 'crown over crossed keys' arms of the archbishop of York with 'Oak & Bell Metal of York Minster burnt May 20 1840' script legend around. 4.90 grams, 17mm (3/4"). Found Canterbury area, Kent, UK, 1980s. The cathedral of York Minster has suffered several fires, both deliberate and accidental, over recent centuries; an arson attack in 1829 resulted in watchmen being employed overnight. The fire of 20 May 1840 was accidental, reportedly caused by a candle left burning in the tower by William Groves of Leeds who was repairing the clock, and the resulting blaze destroyed the belfry. This piece was obviously let into a piece of oak from the belfry roof (various pieces made from oak and bell metal recovered from the area of the fire, such as snuffboxes, are recorded), either as a souvenir to raise much needed funds for repair or for presentation. More recently, the Minster was again badly damaged by fire on 9 July 1984. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
