Weights, pendulum and key. 203cm H x 45cm W x 26cm DNote: Richard Baker is recorded in Loomes, Brian The Early CLOCKMAKERS of Great Britain as being apprenticed through the Blacksmiths` Company to John Chatfield before transferring to Richard Browne in 1683.He gained his Freedom of the Clockmakers` Company by redemption by order of the Lord Mayer in 1685. He is described as a `Great Clockmaker` and took on many apprentices including Peter Garon in 1687 for which he was fined by the Clockmakers` Company as Garon Clockmakers.

A good George III 30 hour oak long clock, domed top to hood supported on turned ringed columns, brass round 12in (30.5cm) dial, Roman chapter with outer Arabic minutes chapter, florally engraved centre, demi-lune date aperture, signed Dugmore/Derby 30 hour ringed four pillar movement countwheel striking on a bell, shaped top to trunk door, shaped brass escutcheon with original key, skirted base, wire rod pendulum and weight, 82in (208.3cm) high (3)John Dugmore (1721-1792) was apprenticed to Thomas Storer of Derby 1735-1742 and set up in business in Rotten Row, Market Place. In 1776 he was made an honorary burgess of Derby & he was also a property owner. He made both traditional and round dial clocks, also with eight day movements. His son Thomas (1766-1832) became an attorney at Thetford, Norfolk. A similar clock is on display in the kitchen at Pickford's House Museum, Derby.

Shipley/Derby, 8-day movement striking on a bell, curly pediment with brass paterae to hood supported on turned columns, inlaid mahogany frieze below hood, fluted quarter columns flanking trunk door with shaped top with marquetry urn in vesica shaped reserve, panel and canted angles to base, bracket feet, pendulum & weights, 87.25in (221.5cm) high.James Shipley (1784-1850) was son of William, of a clockmaking dynasty. He was apprenticed to his uncle 1798-1805 and worked with his elder brother Jonathan until the latter's death in 1811, after which he worked alone and later with his sons Bevel and Digby Shipley. In 1806 he purchased the bankrupt stock of William & John Holliwell of Derby, and worked from no less than four addresses, ending in St. James's Lane from 1843, where he was succeeded by his sons.
