Lot 238

1924 Bentley 3-Litre Vanden Plas Replica TourerRegistration no. KL 4153Chassis no. 858*Originally a saloon by Harrison*Known ownership history*Present ownership since 1958*Restored between 1994 and 2009Footnotes:This Bentley 3-Litre was completed in October 1924 with saloon coachwork by Harrison, and on 7th January 1925 was registered as 'KL 4153' to Henry George Woodham, proprietor of a road-building business in Catford, South London. Interestingly, SU carburettors were specified, which were not standard for long-chassis cars. A letter the current owner received from Henry Woodham's daughter Kathleen in 1963 (on file), shows that the car was much loved by the family, who travelled widely in it to Scotland and to Devon and Cornwall. On 26th March 1937 the Bentley was transferred from private ownership to that of Henry Woodham & Sons Ltd. Around this time the body was replaced with another, lower than the original but more in line with 1930s fashion. According to his daughter, Henry Woodham intensely disliked this conversion. A photograph taken in Woodham's yard in 1939 shows the car with its new body. In 1943 the car's bodywork suffered bomb damage in the yard. At the war's end, the Bentley was sold (on 12th October 1945) to Francis Payne of The Garage, Worcester Place, Oxford. On 9th February 1946, ownership passed to Lt. John William Baker RN, resident at Hayling Island. For the period 1946-1955 the car's history is unclear and based on previous owner's comments. It appears that the Bentley was dismantled with the aim of making a more sporting version. Lt. Baker also had a second Bentley in need of attention. His death in Scotland at the age of 34 brought progress to a halt but not before the registration 'KL 4153' was transferred to the second car (reason unknown). One of his colleagues brought both cars down to Hampshire. On 7th June 1955, ownership was transferred to Lt. Cdr Clement Cambrook of Wickham, Hampshire, passing on 14th October 1958 to the current owner. In 1994 it was decided to rebuild the now dismantled Bentley as a retirement project, which would include shortening the chassis and re-bodying the car as a Vanden Plas replica. On completion in 2009 the car was inspected by the DVLA for authenticity and re-registered with its original registration mark. Accompanying documentation includes the original old-style logbook; a V5C Registration Certificate; MoT to August 2022; and the aforementioned correspondence. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
