A late Victorian key wind silver open face pocket watch signed Kay Jones & Co Worcester, the white enamel dial with central floral detail, black Arabic numerals, bordered by minute track, case decorated with floral and scroll engraving, vacant cartouche, hallmarked Birmingham 1896, with cylinder escapement. Case diameter 40mm. Together with a further silver example and three base metal pocket watches.

Crandon (John). Mr Baxters Aphorisms Exorized and Anthorized. Or an Examination of and Answer to a Book written by Mr Ri. Baxter Teacher of the Church at Kedderminster in Worcester-shire, entituled, Aphorisms of Justification. A Vindication of Justification by meer Grace, from all the Popish and Arminian Sophisms, by which that Author labours to ground it upon Mans Works and Righteousness, 2 parts in one, London: T. Brewster, 1654, lacks 8pp. at rear (index?), some worming to inner margins and some fraying to outer margins, sewing weak and few leaves loose, contemp. calf, leather lifting, cover attachment weak & some slight wear, 4to. Wing C6807. In 1653, when John Crandon was rector of Fawley, he wrote his one book: Mr Baxters Aphorismes Exorcised. This assault on Richard Baxter’s first published work placed him into national prominence at beginning of a doctrinal split within English protestantism. Crandon accused Baxter of wearing a presbyterian mask to conceal his popery. Crandon died in 1654 with debts largely due to the cost of printing his publications. He left his widow Mary with the task of settling his debts. (1)
