He is best known for his editorial work on the poet Christopher Smart. He was born in Washington D.C. and educated at the University of Virginia. A student at Queen's College, Oxford, during the first world war, he was ordained and spent some time in Italy during the early 1920s before returning to Oxford as a fellow at Worcester College. (6)

A Royal Worcester porcelain miniature cabinet coffee cup and saucer, painted by John Flexman, dated 1919, painted with continuous bands of fruit including plums, raspberries, apples and grapes, reserved against a mossy ground, set within segmented cobalt blue and gilt beaded borders, puce printed marks, 5cm high and 9.5cm diameter (2) There is a very small chip to the rim by the handle, but otherwise appears in good condition and no obvious signs of further damages or restoration
