A very rare Flight Worcester mug, circa 1785Of generous cylindrical form, the underglaze blue ground printed with honeycomb diaper and a floral chain and other borders, the reserved panels printed in red overglaze with European landscape vignettes, the front circular panel with a print of two boys using a brood of freshly hatched chicks as an excuse to peer under the skirts of their female companion, 11.3cm high, disguised numeral mark in blue and rare red printed mark 'WORCESTER Manufactory FLIGHT'Footnotes:ProvenanceLord and Lady Flight CollectionThis mug, or another like it, was first reported in the 1950s and caused controversy as at that time the disguised numeral marks were believed to indicate a Caughley origin. This suggested that Flights acted as decorators of Caughley porcelain. Excavations at Worcester subsequently proved that the disguised numeral marks were used by Worcester during the Flight period. No other example of this overglaze print has been recorded. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In anticipation of a quiet life at home, he desired a very special dinner service with which to entertain. The commissioning of this important royal service was described by John Flight in his diary in January 1790... ... 'We used our two best painters last week to make some very fine designs for the Duke of Clarence, we have already completed 3 plates and I have sent them to London. One is a gold arabesque design, another the figure of Hope, the other of Patience.' A few days later on 24th January John Flight added... 'Apart from the two plates mentioned... we have made two others with figures, Peace and Plenty. H.R.H. Duke of Clarence has decided on the Hope design with the decoration that we put on the Peace plate, he has ordered a table service that will amount to more than £700 sterling. He has given us a year in which to complete it...'. The Duke of Clarence service is discussed at length by Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978) and by John Sandon, Worcester Porcelain at Cheekwood (2008), pp.100-102. When the Duke of Clarence became King William IV, the will of Queen Adelaide apparently divided the Hope service between several of William's illegitimate children, including Lord Frederick Fitzclarence and Lady Elizabeth Fitzclarence. Both parts passed by descent until sold by Christies in 1893 and 1900. See also the following lot in this sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In 1893 their part of the set was sold by Charles, 20th Earl of Erroll, at Christie's on May 11, 1893, lots 104-165. It is likely to this auction that the attached paper fragment refers. An important Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester armorial vase and cover, circa 1814-20Painted by Samuel Astles or Thomas Baxter, of plain baluster shape with a flat cover, the front of the vase and the centre of the cover both painted with the full arms of Best of Boxley, Kent, framed within circular panels of raised-paste gilding, reserved on a wide band of finely painted garden flowers, including several varieties of roses, full-blown dahlias and chrysanthemums, primroses, iris, lilac, tulips and cyclamen, the tightly packed flowers continuing all around the vase, borders of classical gold scrollwork and tracery at the neck and base, the cover with a similar frieze of flowers and a border of gold husks, 19cm high, full printed mark with Coventry St address (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceBonhams, 3 June 2015, lot 19Lord and Lady Flight CollectionThis remarkable vase is one of two identical pieces recorded. The companion vase and cover was sold by Phillips in September 1986 and is illustrated by John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p.47. The flower painting is remarkably similar to the decoration around an important mug in the Museum of Royal Worcester decorated with a silhouette portrait of Thomas Baxter himself and dated 'Septr 1814'. While at Worcester from 1814-16, Baxter also taught china painting and among his many gifted pupils was the flower painter Samuel Astles. Signed plaques later exhibited by Astles at the Royal Academy show his virtuosity as a painter of intricate flower compositions and it is highly likely that, having learnt from Thomas Baxter, Samuel Astles was responsible for this remarkable set of armorial vases. The arms are those of the Best family of Boxley and Chatham, Kent. The family was mentioned in Boxley at the beginning of the 17th century where they were very successful brewers. James Best the younger (1755-1828) took over the company his father James had expanded, but had quite expensive tastes, being reprimanded in 1801 by their solicitors for using the brewery money extravagantly. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He specialised in landscapes but also excelled at fish and bird subjects. As a gilder, Salter mastered the difficult technique of raised paste decoration, using a thick enamel underlay to give his gilding a three-dimensional texture. In addition, he applied delicate enamelling on top of the textured gold. A vase signed by E Salter with bird decoration in tooled gold, made in 1898 and closely related to the present ewers, was sold by Bonhams in Edinburgh 7/8 July 2010, lot 587. The same technique was used on a masterpiece by George Owen and Edward Salter sold by Bonhams on 12 November 2014, lot 138.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
