JOSEPH BLACKBURN (1700-1778, BRITISH) Portrait of Thomas Hooper and his Wife Mary (nee Winsmore) of Worcester pair of oils on canvas, both signed and dated 1768 49 x 40 ins, in original period frames (2) Joseph Blackburn (c1730-1778) was an English portrait painter who lived and worked mostly in colonial America and Bermuda.  He enjoyed the patronage of many important, wealthy American families who admired Blackburn’s English connections and style of English Rococo portraiture.  His compositional arrangements influenced a young John Singleton Copley who at the time was Blackburn’s pupil.  Blackburn returned to England in about 1764, where the portraits of Thomas Hooper MD and Mary Winsmore were commissioned and kept in the family thereafter by dissent.  It is thought that about one hundred and fifty of Blackburn’s portraits survive, mostly privately owned in America, some represented in American museums and public art collections.
