A DOCUMENTARY COALPORT BLUE AND WHITE JUG, JOHN ROSE & CO, 1796 painted with flower sprays and swags and inscribed Thos Claro, Upton 1796, 19cm h Literature: 2013, illustrated p184. The only painted and dated piece made during the first year of production at the Coalport factory. Inheriting his father's properties and business, including his "barges and vessels of all sorts", Claro of Upton upon Severn below Worcester was a substantial boat operator who presumably saw the new works beside the Severn and ordered this jug. The flower painting resembles Caughley's Salopian Rose Spray and Tulip and is probably by a former Caughley hand. On coming into his inheritance Claro was obliged to pay a total of £600 to his three sisters, almost as much as the insurance value of Rose's works in 1797. ++Riveted No Reserve
AN INTERESTING COALPORT FAN PATTERN TEAPOT AND COVER, 1800-14 155cm h, mock Oriental mark Provenance: Stockspring Antiques. A unique, presumably special order production, maybe as a replacement, with French style locking cover and decorated in the popular Worcester Fan pattern with the same spurious Chinese mark. The spout, handle and distinctive knop are from the moulds of the rare John Rose shapes illustrated in 1970/81, plt 38. ++Cover chipped under the rim and with restored knop. Tip of spout and handle restored No Reserve
A PAIR OF COALPORT SPILL VASES, A TAPERSTICK AND CRESTED DESSERT PLATE, ALL MADE FOR GEORGE SPARKS OF WORCESTER, 1841-54 the vases painted with named views of Cashiobury [sic] Watford and flowers to the reverse, the plate with border panels painted with birds by John Randall, plate 24cm diam, printed or painted mark Provenance: (vases) Freda and Colin Wharf. ++Vases broken and restuck. Taperstick cracked. Plate with stacking wear No Reserve
A SÈVRES PLATE, THE PORCELAIN C1780 redecorated by Thomas Martin Randall, 24cm diam, with old hand written label Provenance: Royal Worcester Factory Museum until sold Phillips; Richardson Antiques from which purchased 29 January 1999. That plaque is a section of a circular gueridon table, but wrongly attributed to P Ballard. George Randall asserted that piece was "manufactured by my late father... at Shelton after he had removed from Madeley". Its strongly characteristic granular turquoise ground and raised rococo gilding with various different infillings to its small reserves are immediately recognisable on other pieces. George's statement demonstrates that this finest quality Randall Sèvres style was produced not at Madeley but later at Shelton, the distinctive ground and gilding probably by Robert Edward Gray. Illustrated: 1908, p250 No XIII, 1993, p44 monochrome and 1994, February p26. ++In good condition with one or two small rim nicks No Reserve
