Worcester, Charles Somerset, Marquess of (1660 - 98). Autograph manuscript in ink: A Short Account of my Voyage into France Anno 1673 . 118 pp., small 4to., 18th c. calf gilt, with old red morocco label on verso of upper cover reading " A Short Account of the Marquis of Worcester's Voyages into France Anno 1673" (rubbed, joints cracking, small loss to final leaf). Inscribed on Raglan bookplate "from Lady Mary Farquhar", and bookplate "C.S.B." at end (Charlotte Sophia Beaufort, wife of the sixth duke, and mother of Lady Mary). A charming, youthful account of travels through France, with descriptions of the towns and cities, beginning on 6th May, "I went from Chiswick upon the Thames, with my Father in his Coach to Whitehall where having kissed his Majesty hand & had his blessing as Godfather, I came to Rochester in another Coach…accompanied by Mr. Frederick Howard 2nd sonn to the Earle of Carlisle with his Governour Monsieur Roux, my owne Company being a Governour Dr. Edward Chamberlaine a Tutor Mr. Henry Watkins a Valet de Chambre & a Footman." In Paris he is greatly impressed by the Louvre, "ye infinat quantity of huge plate, Rich Hangings…curious cabinets, costly Pictures antient & modern Statues… The observatorie…seated upon high ground for ye use of ye Royal Academy for observing of ye starres & promoting Experimentall Knowledge…" and the menagerie at Versailles, with descriptions of the birds and animals, including an elephant. Charles Somerset later attended Christ Church, Oxford, became a Colonel in the militia, and served as a Deputy Lieutenant and M.P. for Monmouthshire. Dr. Edward Chamberlayne (1616 - 1703) was the author of Angliae Notitia or The Present State of England, 1669, and one of the original Fellows of The Royal Society. See illustration

(first aid party) all night' - 'delayed going home by air-raid, planes over-head gunfire at 1.30 but got some sleep after'; Thursday 7th of September 1940 'Stay in L.H. to mend trestle. Very heavy air raid 5-6.30 p.m., shelter 'Guardian Angels' church M.E. Parish o.k. SCD on fire, A.F,S. in continious streams N & W & central London, much H.E. in East London, night raid attracted by glow of fire'; Sunday 15th September 'Watch mid-day air battle after Church (S.E. at Old Malden'; Thursday 21st November 1940 'letter from Aunt Flo - house damaged by 'land mines', etc.
