Gothic panel. Crown of Aragon, 15th century."Saint Dunstan".In gilded and polychrome wood.It has a label on the back with the name of the owner who gave the work for an exhibition of old paintings (Girona, 1914).Measurements: 40 x 32 cm; 47,5 x 36 cm (frame). The tongs held by the figure in his left hand and the bishop's habit, with mitre and crosier, identify the saint depicted in this Gothic panel as Saint Dunstan. The saint is depicted half-length, in a blessing pose, with the brocade of his tunic carefully reproduced, beneath a relief-worked arcature based on lobed and ribbed profiles. The predominance of gold leaf occupying a large part of the background as a symbol of transcendence was characteristic of the early Gothic period. Several legends have been written about St Dunstan's tongs: according to one of them, originating in the 11th century, the devil visited him in this cell and Dunstan freed himself from temptation by using his tongs to imprison Lucifer's face. Another legend has it that one day he was approached by a strange bipedal creature who asked him to shoe his hooves. When he realised that his hooves were cloven, Dunstan realised that he was in the presence of the devil. He told him that to do his job properly he had to tie him to the wall, and then began to drive the horseshoes in so painfully that the devil begged him to stop. As a condition for his release, the saint made the devil promise never to enter a house with a horseshoe above the door. This is the origin of the lucky horseshoe. Dunstan is considered the patron saint of goldsmiths, as he worked as a blacksmith, painter and jeweller. His feast day is celebrated on 19 May by Catholics, Orthodox and Anglicans. Dunstan (ca. 909-988) was Abbot of Glastonbury, Bishop of Worcester, Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury. Canonised as a saint of the Catholic Church, he played an important role in the reform of monastic life.
