Sir James Edward Alexander An expedition of discovery into the interior of Africa through the hitherto undescribed countries of the Great Namaquas, Boschemans and Hill Damaras 120 mm x 185 mm Sir James Alexander fully intended carrying out his intention of exploring part of Eastern Africa, but as he was forestalled by Dr. A. Smith he decided to pursue his investigations in the West. With this view he proceeded to Namaqualand and Damaraland, which countries were little known at this time. Leaving Cape Town in 1816, he traversed these regions in an ox waggon, and went through a large part of the country now known as German West Africa, arriving at Walvisch Bay almost exhausted with the difficulties of travel and want of water. He draws attention to the education of the natives by the missions, through the medium of the Dutch language, which he considers a mistake, and states that the Damaras have no religious belief. He had a good deal of hunting throughout his journey, and was successful in providing food for his large party. He succeeded in obtaining a good collection of zoological and other specimens, many of which were at that time unknown to the scientific world. The volume contains an account of the social conditions of the Namaquas, Boschmans, and Damaras, several illustrations, a map of the route of the author`s expedition, and the Appendix includes a note upon the Cape Colony. Tabler, E.C. To The Victoria Falls via Matabeleland - The Diary of Maj. Henry Stabb 1875 8vo Major Stabb was an Officer of the 32nd Regiment (Duke of Cornwall`s) Light Infantry, stationed at S.Afr. Headquarters in King William`s Town. In 1875, accompanied by Capt. Glascott of the same Regiment, Major Stabb made a hunting trip through the Transvaal and Matabeleland with the Victoria Falls as their aim. They started on 27th March, with a wagon drawn by a span of twelve oxen, and well equipped for travel and hunting, at a cost of about £600; they were assisted by two soldier-servants, Wood and Harrison, and a wagon driver, a drunken and careless Hottentot called Scheeper. Major Stabb kept a diary during this trip, and accurately wrote down all that befell him and his companion in the course of their travels. He tells about their hunting experiences, the places they visited and the inhabitabts they met. His observations on Lobengula and on the habits and customs of the European aborigines of Matabeleland and Northern Bechuanaland have historical value. Andersson, Charles John Notes of Travel in South Africa 15 x 22 cm A copy rebound for library use in a half binding of marbled paper on board and red leather, no dust-wrapper thus. The front cover and frontispiece were folded over diagonally and the board was repaired with green cloth patches. Octavo (150 x 217mm), 13 preliminary and 338 pages of text; portrait frontispiece. Some wear to head and tail. Condition Good for its age and history. This, posthumously published book, records the final adventures of the author, in the area now known as Namibia, the narrative being continued up to the time of his death on the banks of the Cunene river. The Ovambo Tribe, a warlike race in the north, are described and there are interesting notes about the game birds of the country. There is less emphasis on hunting than in the author`s earlier books, because he had been severely wounded in a battle with Namaquas. There is, however, a chapter on leopard hunting.
