JOHN RIGBY & CO..A .416 (RIGBY) SINGLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAGNUM ACTION BOLT-MAGAZINE BIG GAME RIFLE, serial no. 4728, Mauser serial no. 53514, circa 1918-20 (action circa 1912), 23 3/4in. reblued nitro barrel signed 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 43, SACKVILLE ST. LONDON' (hidden beneath fore-end, barrel possibly tightened), receiver marked 'RIGBY'S SPECIAL .416 BORE FOR BIG GAME' on the receiver-ring, 14 1/4in. figured pistolgrip stock including 3/4in. ventilated rubber recoil pad, case-hardened pistolgrip-cap with hinged trap -cover, the trap containing a spare fore-sight element and clip-on moon-sight, brown leather sling, in original fitted canvas and leather full length rifle case, the lid with John Rigby & Co. trade label. Lots 1166 and 1167 are the former property of the late Rt. Hon. Sir Hugh Beadle P.C., CMG, O.B.E. Sir Hugh was appointed Chief Justice of Rhodesia in 1961 following a career in law and politics. He was perhaps the most colourful and influential personality on the legal scene at the time and was instrumental in many respects during the gradual hand-over of power to Ian Smith's government. He is quoted as saying (although strictly unconfirmed) that if Smith and his Ministers declared illegal independence he would "have the greatest pleasure in stringing them up for treason". He was a great hunting man and famously escaped being trampled by a wounded elephant by throwing his hat to one side in order to distract the animal by taking advantage of its excellent side vision.

LONDON W.', block-mounted bead fore-sight with tunnel cover, block -mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with inlaid centre-line and calibrated to 400 yards, reblued receiver marked '.350 "MAGNUM" RIGBY-MAUSER' on the receiver-ring, 14 3/8in. figured pistolgrip stock with chequered grip and fore-end, butt-plate and pistolgrip-cap each with hinged trap-cover, sling eyes, in original fitted full length leather rifle case lined in red baize (handle and straps detached), the lid with John Rigby & Co. trade label. Josiah Slater (British, 1700-1800), Portrait of Lady Morgan of Tredegar House, with her daughter Miss Morgan, 1825, signed lower right "Josiah Slater 1825", pencil and wash, 27 x 24cm (10.53 x 9.36in). Sir Charles Morgan (who became Baron Tredegar in 1859) and his wife Rosamund, an extremely popular couple, had eleven children including Godfrey and Frederic. Both sons inherited their father's love of hunting and skill at horsemanship. Charles bought Godfrey the horse 'Sir Briggs', the charger that performed so well at the Battle of Balaclava. The Morgan's daughter in the present painting was later Lady Style. They lived at Tredegar House, Newport, Wales
The Property of The Finnis Scott Foundation. John Leech (British, 1817-1864), Mr Briggs Taming a Colt which he has Bred Himself, signed lower left "John Leech"; inscribed lower centre: "Horse Taming/Mr Briggs Taming a Colt which he has Bred Himself!", sketch in oils, 54 x 74cm (21.06 x 28.86in). Provenance: Hartnoll and Eyre, London, where bought by Sir David Scott circa 1968. The illustrations of John Leech appeared in the popular journal 'Punch'. Leech learnt to draw at a young age, initially making character portraits of people who came to his father's Ludgate Hill coffee shop. By 1843 he was sharing the role of 'Punch' cartoonist with Sir John Tenniel, completing some hundred and twenty illustrations for the magazine by his death in 1864. The character of Mr Briggs was invented by Leech in 1849, and is widely considered to be one of the first serialised 'comic book' characters. Briggs was portrayed as an accident-prone and incompetent sportsman, whose forays into the world of riding, racing, fishing and hunting regularly ended in disaster
