Lot 169

Uncommon, early version Taxiphote table-top stereo viewer on free standing pedestal. Circa 1900, with approx 1,200+ glass stereo slides. Viewer is designed for 45x107cm glass slides in interchangeable cassettes of 25 and features focusing eyepieces, interocular adjustment and lever-operated, semi-automatic slide advance. After the last of the 25 images has been viewed a typewriter style bell rings, indicating a change of cassette is required. The viewer simply sits on top of the rare pedestal library stand, which is lockable (KEY WITH OFFICE). Approx 1,200 glass slides are included, most are contained in 48 numbered cassettes, each of 25 images. Each slide is titled and described in the accompanying hand written note book (WITH OFFICE) of later date. Some sides are titled in the clear centre section between the 2 images and titles can be viewed by operating the side-mounted lever which blocks the image to one eyepiece and swings a mirror across to the other. The images cover a very wide rage of subjects but appear to be mostly of an Upper Class, Edwardian family at home and on various holidays at home and abroad. Included are several rare images of hunting, shooting, fishing, golf etc at a (Scottish?) stately home, boat trips, including the family with crew and one image of them with their cameras, images from The Grand Tour, including Venice from a gondola, early motor car shots, Derby Day (excellent shots), Coronation of King George V & Queen Mary (insider views) plus many from Indian or Egyptian excavations etc. The few dated images range from the mid 1910s to 1936, with the latter showing nicely dressed children lining the street of a German town, while Swastikas fly from the buildings. Exposures vary considerably from poor to perfect, with many from slightly under exposed to fair to average. Viewer is in full working order (condition 5E). Some glass slides show wear and a small number show chips or 'nibbles' to the glass. MANY hours of interesting viewing! Also included is a separate box of 14 Taxiphote cassettes, each contains extra slides and a quantity of stereo glass negatives, some relating to the stereo positives. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS LOT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR POSTING (can be collected from the Wolverhampton Camera Fair the day after the auction, or from Dudley within 7 days by arrangement).
