Taxidermy: A Rare Diorama Cased Fox Terrier and Fox, by Peter Spicer, circa 1900, the full mount terrier stood upon a large faux rock snarling and looking down above a fox with mouth agape in defensive pose, both full mounts set amongst a natural woodland setting with ferns tall grasses moss and lichen, against a watercolour painted woodland back board, enclosed within a period three-glass ebonised framed display case 109cm by 52.5cm by 79cm, signed pebble to interior of the case Peter Spicer Leamington, taxidermists full paper trade label to verso Provenance: This diorama case by Peter Spicer has been passed down through the family of Henry Allison (d.1917), a tenant farmer on the Skelton Castle Estate in Cleveland and owner of the present fox terrier. According to family lore, c1900 Allison's terrier was accidentally killed whilst out hunting by the horse of Squire William Wharton, the owner of the Skelton Estate. Such was the Squire's remorse, that he had the case commissioned for Allison, as a gift to remember his terrier by. Peter Spicer is regarded as one of the greatest British taxidermists. He was born in 1839 and died on the 20th of January 1935, aged 96, which was a surprise to many as he was in frequent contact with arsenic. He ran a large taxidermy company in Leamington Spa during the late 19th and early 20th Century. His cased work is characterised by evocative watercolour painted backdrops and highly realistic bases made from papier-mache with dried vegetation and real signed pebbles which was a trademark way of identifying his work.slight water damage to the label on the verso of case 05/09/17 Robbie
19TH CENTURY WELSH MAHOGANY THIRTY HOUR LONG CASE CLOCK, the face marked: Thomas Clatworthy, Ystrad, having broken swan neck pediment with brass eagle finial above arched aperture flanked by spirally turned columns, the strung inlaid, moulded waist door flanked by canted angles on a strung outlined, panelled base and bracket feet. 18" x 12.75" arch painted face with Roman numerals, female figure to the arch and hunting and pastoral scenes to the spandrels, seconds dial and date aperture. 30 hour movement strikes on one bell, overall 220cm high approx. (B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Fair condition overall considering age, some wear to the face, includes weight and pendulum.
PAIR OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY PIERCED IRISH SILVER CIRCULAR WINE COASTERS, having wooden bases, overall decorated with hunting scenes including: rifle; birds; hounds amongst foliage, scrollwork and berries, both with vacant cartouche, hallmarked with maker's mark: J.W.,probably John West, c. 1805. Both have hand engraved dates to inner rim, one reading: 6.11.12. 13cm diameter, 7cm high. (2) (B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Both in good overall condition with no obvious major damage to silver, or losses. Surface wear, minor dings, slightly misshaped as expected with age. No hallmarks apart from maker's mark: J.W. Wooden bases are scratched and a little worn.
Good Lahore hunting rug, north east Pakistan, circa 1950s-60s, 7ft. 2in. X 4ft. 8in. 2.18m. X 1.42m. The ivory field featuring a lion, leopard, deer, a blue elephant and a blue water buffalo, and exotic birds among cypress trees, flowering trees and shrubs with two huntsmen on horseback emerging from the right hand side centre. The main border of cartouches featuring individual animals, birds and flowers. Finely woven with velvety wool.
