John Read of Bedford (British, active 1773-1794) Hunting at Colworth, Bedfordshire - the Riders, Horses and Hounds are all Portraits -, oil on canvas, in an egg and dart frame, 80 x 160cm (31.20 x 62.40in). Provenance: By descent within the Lee family at Colworth House, Bedfordshire. In the Lee Family Accounts Book of 1772 it records: "Memorandum of Mr W Lee 29 September 1772 - paid Read for a hunting picture £7 7s 0d - Gave Read an extra 16 shillings". Recorded in the 1816 Inventory as in the Dining Room (p.53 - a hunting piece in a neat Gilt Frame) By descent at Colworth until removed by the family to Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire, presumbably circa 1820 when Colworth was leased. Thence at Hartwell until the sale on the premises, Sotheby`s, 26-28 April 1938, lot 37, (where attributed to John Hunt) Where bought by Captain Hill for 115 pounds. Shortly thereafter acquired by the late owner`s husband`s father, the 1st Lord Luke, thence by descent. Literature: In the Lee Family Accounts Book, 1772. The History of Bedfordshire, Joyce Godber, pub. 1969, plate no. 66 (as attributed to John Hunt and dated c.1780) The History of Colworth House, James Collett-White, Inventories of Bedfordshire Country Houses 1714-1830, Bedfordshire Historical Record Society Volume 74 , 1995. Colworth in Context by Michael Jones, published 1997, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Unilever Research Laboratory at Colworth House, plate 72. The History of Colworth House, James Collett-White, Inventories of Bedfordshire Country Houses 1714-1830, Bedfordshire Historical Record Society Volume 74, 1995. This hunting scene, apparently erroneously attributed on its label to an unknown `John Hunt`, is most probably the picture by John Read of Bedford (active 1773-94) to whom payment of £7 7shillings plus an additional 16 shillings is recorded on 29th September 1772, for a ``hunting piece``. By family tradition and from the dating of the painting, the riders are probably as follows. In the centre, William Lee of Totteridge (1726 -1778) who came to Colworth in 1771 on the death of his cousin Richard Antonie. Though holding Colworth on behalf of his eldest son - also William (1764-1815) who assumed the name Antonie, William (senior) added after May 1772 the wings to the house. The lady in white is William`s wife Philadelphia (died 1799) nee Dycke, a daughter presumably of Sir Thomas Dycke, 2nd Baronet. Beyond the middle hedge is The Reverend the Hon. Ambrose St John (1743-1775) 4th son of The 10th Lord St John and Rector of nearby Bletsoe. The gentleman on the bay beyond and behind Mrs Lee is Mr William Lally, friend, family solicitor and from 1778 guardian to the Lee children. The rider in the far distance as well as the figures on foot behind a hedge are uncertain, though the latter probably include the Lee daughters and possibly a nanny or grandmother. The gentleman on the grey is said to be Edward Arrowsmith who later married the Lees` daughter Louisa and helped run the Colworth Estate from 1797. The other three riders wearing caps are Hunt Servants. Odell church is on the left and Souldrop church is on the right in the landscape. It is interesting that the boy who inherits the Colworth estate is not present in the painting.
