Baron Manfred von Richthofen [2 May 1892 - 21 April 1918] - A Fragment of Wood from the Original Coffin of the Legendary Fighter Ace, mounted for display The ïRed BaronÍ was buried with full military honours in the late afternoon of the 22nd of April 1918 at a cemetery in the small village of Bertangles. The coffin was preceded by a firing party, slow marching with arms reversed, drawn from personnel of No. 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. The body of von Richthofen was transferred to Fricourt Cemetery after the end of the Great War and reburied in Berlin in 1925. In 1975, after several years of negotiations with the East German Goverment, a third move came when the remains were moved to the family vault at Weisbaden where they now remain. This particular artefact came from the original coffin, and was once part of the vast collection of the American author P. J. Carisella, who co-wrote the definitive explorations into the mystery of von RichthofenÍs death ñWho Killed the Red Baronî, published in 1969, which raised the question for the first time that he had in fact been shot down from ground fire Souvenir hunting of this kind was common in the Great War, particularly in connection with Von Richthofen. Although his tri-plane was relatively unscathed in its crash landing, within an hour both the aircraft and his body had been totally stripped by souvenir hunting allied servicemen, when the authorities were finally able to reach the site, all that was found was the skeleton of the plane and von RichthofenÍs naked body. It seems that when his coffin was transferred to Fricourt, even this did not escape the attention of the souvenir hunters.
