Late 14th-first half of 16th century AD. A pair of lead pilgrim badges, each formed from three disc depicting scenes from Christ life: top left crucifixion, top right resurrection and bottom with Christ at the Column; to one badge a small decorative cross and two thin eyelets. 9.27 grams total, 27-35mm (1 - 1 1/2"). Ex Burfield collection, Canada; acquired in the 1980s. Accompanied by a copy of the article published in Treasure Hunting magazine (October 2014), with images of these badges and information about the pilgrimage. In 1383, after the fire in the town of Bad Wilsnack, three consecrated communion hosts were found undamaged in the ruins of the church. According to the legend, they were sprinkled with the Holy Blood of Christ, which made Bad Wilsnack a famous pilgrimage site. Produced badges were distinctive in shape of three circles arranged in a form of a triangle and painted in red, referring to this miracle. Although the miracle was doubted by reformation movement scholars like John Hus, the final blow came in 1552, when the miraculous communion hosts were publicly burned. Fine to very fine condition.
