It was a task considered appropriate for the home and was undertaken by women of all levels of society, from daughters of professional families to aristocratic women including Bess of Hardwick. The techniques were learnt by completing samplers before developing into more elaborate pieces used for clothing and as decoration for luxury items, the skills to be admired and the subject matters serving as moral lessons. Subjects being naturalistic, pastoral and often being biblical, and at this time of political and religious upheaval, and loyalties were sometimes implied through the inclusion of particular figures. Several included crowned figures of Kings and Queens, representing Charles I or Charles II and Henrietta Maria or Catherine of Braganza. He trained in his father's workshop and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1841, studying under Ramey and Dumont. In 1842, he earned the second Prix de Rome. He went on to receive several prestigious awards, including medals in 1855 and 1878, and in 1897, he was honored with a medal of honor for his contributions to the Salon.Moreau completed many public commissions, particularly for commemorative monuments, and contributed to the decorations of notable buildings such as the churches of Saint-Augustin and Trinity, the courthouse, the Hôtel de Ville, and the Tuileries. The piece seems to be a core axe of Thames pick type, with pointed butt and rounded cutting edge. Core tools, now hafted, were used for woodworking in an environment now increasingly forested.
