A remarkable travel diary documenting the 10-month honeymoon of an English couple Lily & Godfrey Armitage which commenced from Manchester in September 1893 and ended in Plymouth May 1894. Their trip is based upon a Cook's World Tour which takes in America, Canada, Japan, China, Ceylon and India. The hard-backed monogrammed Japanese lacquered diary contains approximately 150 pages, of which 129 are well-filled with Lily Armitage's handwritten account of their exploits, many of which are highly amusing, and is supplemented with her charming watercolours and pasted-in photographs, dried plants and flowers, feathers, hotel and ships menus, rice paper watercolours from China, newspaper clippings, brochures, tickets, stamps and all manner of other illustrated material. The Armitages are clearly adventurous travellers and spend two weeks of the American/Canadian part of their holiday out on the prairies on a hunting trip with Lily's sister Alice, in which they camp out every night, shoot and prepare their own food and encounter wolves, bears and the Native American Sioux Indians. "This last day we did 30 miles, leaving Jim and Godfrey to drive the wagon. We had rather an anxious time trying to keep to the right trail which was very difficult and we met several 'hitchies'? (Indians) They look at you in such a funny way that you feel rather uncomfortable." "We stopped and asked where we could get taken in for the night & he directed us to a farm which was a log and mud hut consisting of 4 rooms, the family were French, half breeds, very dark. They were most kind and gave us a very good meal of tea, hot bread and jam, we were nearly famished, so did it justice, they were most interested in us and all stood round watching us eat." She describes life on board the various ships of their voyage with great humour, mad passengers, infighting amongst Chinese stewards, storms at sea etc. There is a gruesome description of an elephant hunt, visiting an opium den, balls, foreign theatre trips and her impressions of local life in every country they visited. There are a wealth of very interesting early photographs, those from Japan, India and Ceylon are of particular note. A fascinating historical document.(See illustration)
