KOLLONTAI ALEXANDRA: (1872-1952) Russian Communist Revolutionary. A member of the Mensheviks first, and further Bolshevik Party, she was one of the first and few women appointed as Soviet Ambassador. Rare T.L.S., `A.Kollontay´, two pages, 4to, Oslo, 17th February 1925, in Cyrillic. Signed by Alexandra Kollontai in her capacity as Plenipotentiary Minister of the U.S.S.R to Norway. The letter bearing the printed heading, in French and Cyrillic, of the U.S.S.R legation in Norway, is a license approval stating in part `..is hereby authorized for sea-hunting in the territorial waters of Russia on the North cost of European Russia from the Finnish frontier up to Novaya Zemlya along the seaside of the continent and islands, except water zone of the White Sea, south of the Orlovsky Light-house and Cape Kanushin line, where the hunting is forbidden.´, further saying `This certificate is issued on the basis of the contract agreement signed by the Government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics with the "Aaalesund Navigation Union, group of seal hunters", and ratified by the Council of Peoples' Commissars on 16th December 1924.´ Also bearing two countersignatures beneath Kollontai´s one, and alongside a C.C.C.P. ink stamp. Four binder holes to the left border with very small area of paper loss around them, none affecting the text or signatures. G £600-900

HEMINGWAY ERNEST: (1899-1961) American Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1954, Pulitzer Prize winner 1953. A wonderful illustrated A.L.S., Papa, one page, 4to, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 25th November 1954, to his son, John ('Jack') H. N. Hemingway ('Dear Bum'). Hemingway informs his son that 'we have been swamped here with the Prize thing and all work and everything else put on the burn between journalists, photographers and crazies', explaining that he is going to Paraiso for two weeks to escape them and that he has been really over-run ('Am 200 cables and 400 letters behind the ball'). The novelist continues to write on family and social matters, 'Am very happy all your news is so good and that you had such good shooting and lovely fishing on your birthday. Delighted things going well with Puck's [his daughter-in-law, Byra] health…..Mouse [his second son, Patrick] seems fine and has been hunting very well….He had a pretty close thing with a buff and behaved perfectly. Killed a fine bull buff and very fine lion…..These skullheads must be wonderful smoked', further discussing financial matters and a dividend cheque before also remarking 'Gig [his third son, Gregory] writes when he feels like it. Doesn't answer important letters and you have to be very careful not to offend his perfect judgement. But on the whole he seems much better. Maybe he is just working hard finishing pre-med'. Hemingway concludes his letter writing 'Give Puck our love and luck…..Mary [his fourth wife] sends her love. Tell Miss Muffet [his grandchild, Joan, the eldest daughter of Jack and Byra] we have a true gray feather kitty now' and alongside his signature has added an enigmatic sketch of two circles enclosed within an oval and with the caption 'Ein kuss with Paulsen Pies (sur-realist)'. Accompanied by the original air mail envelope hand addressed by Hemingway to his son in Portland, Oregon, and signed ('E. Hemingway') above the printed return address to the verso. An excellent letter written in the month after Hemingway received the Nobel Prize for Literature and with good references to his passion for hunting and several of his, sometimes troubled, family members. HARRISON, LONDONA SILVER-MOUNTED 13-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, no visible serial number,circa 1775, with 37in. two-stage barrel of Spanish form, the top-flat signed in a silver banner 'HARRISON, LONDON', three gold inlaid pineapple devices at breech arranged around a central gold poincon of a seated cat, applied silver fore-sight on a silver four-pointed starburst ground, between each point a small silver quatrefoil, carved band at the barrel intersection, the octagonal section inlet with engraved silver triangles to each flat, repeated in reverse at breech, engraved iron top-tang with shallow sighting groove, plain bevel edged lock with stepped and pointed tail and signed beneath the gold lined pan (signature rubbed and illegible), dot and square chequered walnut hand-rail half-stock with silver wire inlet monogram behind top-tang, silver skeletal heel-plate, the top-spur terminating in a silver eagle, silver trigger guard bow, the finial in the form of a silver hunting dog in a woodland setting, silver fully carved and engraved sideplate featuring an eagle against a rococo ground flanked by martial trophies, detachable fore-end probably cut back from full and with an engraved silver band at tip and shaped barrel key escutcheons, full length silver under-rib with silver ramrod throat and two further pipes and working replacement ramrod.

NOCK LONDON' (refreshed), small white-metal fore-sight and a standing notch rear-sight applied to the scroll engraved top-tang, triple ported platinum lined vent, re-coloured bevel-edged lock signed on the tail 'H. NOCK', sliding safe forwards of the hammer, re-coloured pan, roller frizzen and hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (damage at head), applied padded leather cheek-piece, re-blued iron furniture including heel-plate, the top-spur engraved with a hunting dog, scroll engraved roll-edged trigger-guard bow and equipped with a replacement horn-mounted under-barrel ramrod.
