Medieval Bronze Hawking Seal MatrixA circular copper-alloy seal matrix, circa 14th century. The seal is very well engraved with the image of a hawk/falcon perched on a gloved hand, around is the legend, "AVE MARIA GRACIA PLEN". Translated meaning, hail Mary full of grace. On the reverse is an intact suspension loop. The image of the hand, hawk and religious inscription suggests a strong hawking connection as the sport was not just popular among the upper class citizens, it was especially so among the clergy who were noted for their fondness for falconry. Weight: 7.03 grams. Size: 22.28 mm.Note: Pope Leo X was an avid falconer, who went on frequent hunting excursions with his birds. In some religious orders, falcons were even taken into religious services, so much so that nuns, many of whom during this time were rarely seen without their falcons on their wrists, were reprimanded for bringing their birds into the chapel by bishops, who complained the practice interfered with the services.

Size: 20.35 mm.Ex A Smith Collection.Note: The inscription and imagery we see on this seal represents the legendary story of St Hubert and holds strong meaningHubert, after the death of his wife retreated from the court, withdrew into the forested Ardennes, and gave himself up entirely to hunting. However, a great spiritual revolution was imminent. According to a late legend the following happened: On Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the churches, Hubert sallied forth to the chase. As he was pursuing a magnificent stag the animal turned and, as the pious legend narrates, he was astounded at perceiving a crucifix standing between its antlers, while he heard a voice saying: "Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord, and leadest an holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into hell". Hubert dismounted, prostrated himself and said, "Lord, what wouldst Thou have me do?" He received the answer, "Go and seek Lambert, and he will instruct you."
