Lot 433

French School (18th Century) Caricature Studies of Ladies as Chickens, with a Supercilious Gentleman Watching as a Pigeon in a Tree; and a Centaur Suitor Charming Ladies as Deer, watercolour (a pair) 35 x 25cm (13.65 x 9.75in) Possibly the King and Queen portrayed in a sylvan landscape, at the Parcs aux Cerfs, where Louis XV maintained a number of pretty girls at great expense after the passing of Madame de Pompadour. The doves could be Louis XV`s daughters of whom he had four, one who entered a convent. The style is reminiscent of Claude-Louis Desrais, but they probably date from around 1770. The one with the chickens is poking fun at Madame du Barry, Louis XV`s last mistress. Louis himself is represented by the bird at upper right; Madame du Barry is probably the female "poule" (old and modern slang for prostitute) seated on the lower step. The "man" next to her might be a religious advisor, but it could also be her husband (Comte Guillaume du Barry) who was found for her to allow her to become the King`s official mistress and to take her place at court (she was illegitimate, of low birth, a courtesan, and she needed a title) The centaurs might represent both Louis XV and, even more, his son the Dauphin, who became Louis XVI - both were hunting mad and it is likely that women who hunted had a special allure for them. It has the appearance of an actual incident in which the King, when out hunting, singled out one of the women for special attention - and presumably she became his mistress for a brief time, but I does not appear to be one of the famous ones… Chateauroux, de Pompadour or Du Barry
