Important Historic Zoological Specimens. A private collection of three rhinoceros horns mounted on limed oak shields. Horn one - 42cm long, 14cm wide, total weight 2.35kg; Horn two - 24cm long, 13cm wide, total weight 1.65kg; Horn three - 22cm long, 13cm wide, total weight 1.4kg. Provenance: Bostock & Wombwells Circus and Travelling Menagerie. These horns are from the estate of the proprietor, Frank Bostock (known as little Frank) and thence by descent. The business was closed in the late 1930`s with the war looming. These horn are not hunting trophies and have nothing to do with the current illegal and illicit trading of endangered species. DEFRA (Animal Health) Authority to Sell & Restrictions: Approval and authority to sell these horns was granted on 14th February 2011 (Ref no 053-11) and may therefore be legally traded by Golding Young Limited in the UK without the need for further CITES certification. It is important to note that Animal Health advise that it is `unlikely that DEFRA will grant a CITES re-export certificate for these items` and that the auctioneers have a duty to make this clear to buyers from any non-EU countries that these restrictions will be enforced. A rare pearlware Armorial Mug, c.1800, printed in blue with a bearing of crossed shovels and three pickaxes on a bend and a hunting horn above the motto ITUM EST IN VISCERA TERRAE, all below a well-head crest within a printed oak wreath flanked by painted willow and house, stained, cracked, tiny chip, 15.5cm. The crest is borne by several families: Rhan; Wrench; Coucher; Cowcher; Hodiswell and Wells. The motto is a quotation from Ovid`s Metamorphosis, Book I and translates as: `…they delved as well into the very bowels of the earth`, however, we have been unable to attribute the three elements to one family or organisation and it was probably ordered for a well-digging or mining concern.
