A marble frieze fragment depicting a hunting scene with the goddess Diana dressed in a short hunting dress, her left hand reaching for arrows, right hand holding a bow; by her left leg a standing hunting dog; head and right arm absent. 400 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Fair condition. Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1980.

Fine condition. From an important London collection, acquired in the 1970s.
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A mixed group of glazed composition pendants and beads including a figure of Bes, three scaraboids; a lotus flower pendant; a figural pendant; a plaque with hunting scene; a glass ring insert on old collector's card. 16 grams total, 11-51mm including card (1/2 - 2"). Fine condition. Ex Terence Eva collection, London, UK; formed 1970s-1980s. See Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994 for discussion.
1st-2nd century AD. A D-shaped marble stele with scene in high relief of a horseman on a galloping horse, short cloak over his left shoulder and right arm raised holding a hunting horn(?); hunting dog running alongside. 907 grams, 15.5 x 18cm (6 x 7"). Fine condition. Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. See Nicolae, C. The Iconography of the Antique Hero in the Balkan Area, in Marisia vol.XXXI, 2011, for discussion of the iconography. There was a widespread cult from about 1000 BC of gods or heroes who appeared as hunters or riders on horseback. Examples are the Greek Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, the Romano-Celtic Jupiter Taranis and the Danubian rider-gods. The main god of Thrace was a rider-god who was extremely popular in the Roman period and who appears to have had no name but was referred to only as the hero.

TAXIDERMY FOX ATTRIBUTED TO HENRY 'HARRY' SHAW, cased and standing on a an artificial blue-grey rocky base, surrounded by foliage, the fox in hunting position, label verso inscribed 'H Shaw, Shrewsbury, December 15th, 1877', case size 100w x 33d x 70h cms Auctioneer's Note: Henry Shaw 1812-1887, was a notable taxidermist of the period, the first short-toed lark discovered in GB was recognised by Shaw as recorded by Yarrell's 'History of British Birds'. Shaw received notable commissions but the preparation of three, now extinct, Great Auks, located at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, are worthy of special mention
A C20TH HAND LOOMED MEDIEVAL TAPESTRY This large wall hanging tapestry has been hand loomed from wool in vivid colours portraying the German Medieval myth 'Hunting the Unicorn' copying the well known tapestries from the early 14th Century. The tapestry is in excellent condition, backed in cotton and hangs from a pole with finials. 73" x 46". (1)

FORTNUM "Majolica & Co.", published by Chapman & Hall, Piccadilly, various volumes of "The Strand" magazine, edited by Geo. Newnes, together with various titles by WILLIAM HARRISON AINSWORTH including "Old St. Paul's", published by George Routledge & Sons London 1879, etc CONDITION REPORTS The book titled "Maiolica ..." is embossed to front cover "Dorothy Wemyss 1878" and has wear, discolouration, foxing etc. The volumes of The Strand are all bound volumes - late 19th and early 20th Century - please see photos for details of volumes present - there are 21 volumes in total, all with wear, scuffs, fading, some damage, foxing, varying degrees of wear, marks, dirt etc. The Bradbury Agnew & Co publications in red bindings - 7 volumes in total, some quite heavy wear, creasing, some tears and damage, discolouration, dirt etc, titles are "Handley Cross or Mr Jorocks's Hunt", "Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour" x 2, "Ask Mamma or the Richest Commoner in England", "Hawbuck Grange", "Mr Romford's Hounds", and "Plain or Ringlets". There is a collection of George Eliot novels x 8 volumes. There are 3 volumes of "Windsor Magazine" - 1899, 1900 and 1901 - all in very poor condition with fading, wear, tears, damage. There is one volume "Little Brother and Little Sister" illustrated by Arthur Rackham, published Constable & Co Ltd London - overall wear and damage and some tears, boards separating, foxing, dirt, fading, colour plates have creasing, wear, and are attached/glued to the page at their top edges but are otherwise not stuck down. There are 5 volumes of "The Book of Nature Study" edited by Bretland Farmer, pulbished the Caxton Publishing Company Clun House, Surrey Street, WC - some wear dirt scuffs and discolouration.
