Mills (John) The Sportsman's Library, xxviii, 431pp., half-title, lithographed portrait frontispiece, plates, a little very light damp-staining to some plates, original red cloth, light soiling, spine faded, 8vo, Edinburgh, William Paterson, n.d., [?1845]. *** This edition has been called 'very scarce'; it may or may not have preceded that listed in Westwood and Satchell, p.152, which was published by W. Tait, Edinburgh. This edition does however have "Printed by William Tait, 107, Prince's Street" on the final page. The difference between the 2 editions seems to have been that the Tait had printed illustrations whereas the Paterson contained lithographs. Contains sections on hunting, shooting, game, sporting dogs and angling.

Hogg, n.d. [?c.1785]. *** Westwood & Satchell write "Identical with Fairfax's 'Complete Sportsman' but with some revision and correction." Angling is included pp.1-44, along with "The breeding and managing game cocks ... , horse-racing, fox-hunting, hare-hunting ... shooting ... " and more.

Eiusdem de Venatione Libri IIII, (Graece), translated by Laurentius Lippius, woodcut printer's device on title, text in Greek and Latin, corner of front free endpaper with small tear, lacking one leaf (N7 or N8), hinges weak, contemporary vellum, a few small tears and holes to spine, light soiling, [Adams O200; Schwerdt II p.50; Westwood & Satchell p.163], 8vo, Venice, Aldus, 1517. *** Rare: the first Aldine edition. Brunet states that this edition is "Rare et recherche", although the text is thought to be less accurate than that of 1515. Contains Oppianus' poem on fishes in five books, his poem on hunting in three books, and Lippius' Latin translation of the former. Includes the first edition of the poem "de venatione".
