ASQUITH H. H.: (1852-1928) British Prime Minister 1908-16. Small series of three A.Ls.S. and one T.L.S., H. H. Asquith (1) and Oxford (3), eight pages (total), 8vo and smaller (1), London and Berkshire, 12th December 1923 - 13th March 1926, all to Sir Courtenay Mansel. Asquith thanks his correspondent for a copy of The South Wind, comments on Lord Mansel who 'seems to have been a good fellow: the sort of friend to go tiger-hunting with', invites his correspondent, as a responsible leader of Liberal opinion, to a private meeting with Lord Grey of Falloden in order to discuss 'the steps which ought to be taken to ensure that Liberal Headquarters shall be provided with the resources necessary for its efficient working' and also states, in a letter marked Personal, 'I have always expressed and acted upon the opinion that there should be wide latitude for individual judgement in the Liberal party. But I confess I was surprised to read, from a Liberal pen, a wholesale denunciation of the Parliament Act, of which one of the main purposes was to make Liberal legislation possible'. One of the letters, on a printed correspondence card, has a heavy vertical fold to the centre, G (1) to VG, 4 Sir Courtenay Mansel (1880-1933) Welsh Landowner and Farmer, Barrister and Liberal Party Politician who later joined the Conservatives.
A pair of Vintage Ray-Ban Bausch & Lomb 'Outdoorsman Bullet hole Kalichrome shooters' The yellow metal wire frame featuring Bausch & Lomb Kalichrome yellow hunting and shooting lens, 13cm wide, together with a pair of vintage Ray-Ban 13cm wide, both lacking cases, (both unused and from a collection of Vintage deadstock).(2)
Sword: A 19th century hunting hanger. Unfullered slightly curved blade with clipped back point. Armoured mark (?) to both sides of blade, deeply stamped with image of a crowned head. Clawshell guard with knucklebow decorated with a figure. Staghorn grip. Crossguard with acorn finial. Brass flat pommel with winged head decoration. Blade 22". In a possibly later military type brass mounted leather scabbard (leather worn) This lot requires viewing. Interesting lot.
A Victorian papier-mache tray of rectangular form, the centre field decorated with fox hunting scene within a bamboo decorated border, by Dyson & Benson of London, bears crowned stamp verso, 77 cm x 58 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall wear and scuffs, some warping, some damage and repairs, including to rim, where there has been some fillering and overpainting. Various splits and cracks, and some chips and losses to rim. Quite a lot of wear to the gilding. Some pitting and deterioration to the surface, various cracquelure. Base appears to be a separate board attached to the rim. Some small splits and some cup marks. Also has some bracket the sides to reverse, possibly repairs or for strengthening.
The Ernest Philipps Photographic Negative Archive, Philipps (1894-1974) was an intrepid press photographer who started in the business at 13, doing his first solo shoot at the 1910 Derby. He took photographs at Gallipoli in 1915, then worked in Fleet Street after the war, co-founding Fox Photos. He later moved to Southampton and remained there as a freelance until the 1960s. The archive consists of about 2,000 silver nitrate negatives, the vast majority on glass with some on celluloid; all are now stored in archival Secol sleeves in 23 boxes - half-plate (5), quarter-plate (18) - with most images dating from the 1940s and 1950s, with some into the 1960s; subject matter noted includes: motor cars, garages, commercial vehicles, liner passengers including on the Queen Mary, noting Oscar Homolka, Yehudi Menuhin and Stirling Moss, the 1946 visit of George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Winchester, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, weddings, naval and military personnel in groups and wartime defences, Sunderland aircraft, aerial views of docks, hunting, farming, divers, parties, Diana Dors and exported goods, G (qty), with some modern sample prints; sold with copyright
