Follower of John Ferneley, Senior (British, 1782-1860) Captain Richard Martin of Brampton on his bay hunter out hunting sold with the hunting whip carried by Captain Martin inscribed "Richard Martin, Brampton Lodge, from DA", oil on canvas 62 x 74cm (24 x 29in) Provenance: Richard Martin, Brampton Lodge, Huntingdon, and by descent; A gift in 1896 to Socrates Lodge, Huntingdon. Captain Richard Martin, third son of Mr Henry Martin of Brampton Lodge, county of Huntingdon, died in the East Indies in his 32nd year. By repute, Captain Martin is riding a winner of the Cesarewitch Handicap. The winners are seldom if ever bred from so he is out hunting, and presumably he had been given to Captain Martin, who may have been a part owner. Captain Martin's dress and bearing indicate that he is probably an ex-cavalry officer - by the length of the horse's tail the painting is from the late 1800s. The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres), and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It is scheduled to take place each year in October. Loose in the frame, quite dirty and with the odd tiny hole. Areas of wear and damage, small tear along the right-hand edge, yellowed varnish, old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front.
