Based since this time in Zella-Mehlis, one of the traditional centres of German gunmaking, the firm is making fine quality hunting rifles and accessories under the direction of Jorg Schilling, the fourth generation to hold the reigns of the family company. The company originally made parts for other gunmakers in the region, specialising in machined items for revolvers and pistols, and by 1912 were one of the most technically advanced machining companies in the region. The firm were forced to change direction with the end of the Second World War with the ban on fireams production in Germany. Porduction varied from items for agricultural machines to cigarette lighters, and by 1950 they were supplying the Zeiss works at Jena with machined parts for telescopic sights. Politics intervened in 1972 when the firm was nationalised under the East German government and a period of decline began. With re-unification came the chance of a new beginning and plans were hatched in 1994 to return to gunmaking. In 1998, exactly one hundred years after the firm was founded by Alfred Schilling, Jorg began production in the same premises. Jorg, whose background includes a degree in precision enginnering from the University of Jena and many years working for Suhler Jagd-und Sportwaffen GmbH (the makers of Merkel firearms) is now living his dream. Beyond firearm production the firm also offers a colour-hardening service to the gun trade.

LONDON', block-mounted bead fore-sight, blued receiver engraved 'SIGHTED / & / REGULATED / FOR .22 HIGH POWER / WINCHESTER CARTRIDGE', cocking-piece with Rigby patent peep-sight, 15in. pistolgrip stock with raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, sling eyes, horn pistolgrip-cap, and much original blued finish throughout, in full length canvas and leather rifle case, the lid with Rigby label (torn); together with a framed picture of Bell in later life, some image extracts from his safaris and illustrations on aiming points, and a Safari Press set of his three books: 'Bell of Africa', Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter' and 'Karamojo Safari'. Other Notes: Walter Dalrymple Maitland 'Karamojo' Bell was one of the most successful elephant hunters of all time, as well as perhaps one of the most controversial. He was a great exponent of the use of small calibre rifles against large and potentially dangerous game. His argument was a calm carefully aimed shot was just as effective as any large calibre rifle. His favoured rifle for elephant was a .275 Rigby using a brain shot. Bell was a great adventurer, beyond hunting he saw action in the Boer War, served as an aviator in the First World War and gold-panned in the Alaskan Klondike gold rush. The nick-name 'Karamojo' Bell was earned from his hunting in the Karamojo region of north east Uganda between 1902 and 1907. He died in 1957 at Corriemoillie, his Ross-Shire estate. A copy of the entry in Rigby's register accompanies this rifle stating the date of sale as May 31st, 1929 to Capt. WDM Bell.

WSB was an assiduous diarist commenting on the political affairs of the time, people he met and his frequent days out hunting and shooting. Born on 17th August 1840 at Petworth House he was soon to loose his father leaving him, his brother and sister of Wards of Chancery. WSB was later to inherit Crabbet Park on the death of his brother Francis continuing a tradition of Sussex landownership that stretched back several centuries. A monument to Francis carved by WSB out of alabaster is to be found in the Friary Church in Crawley, Sussex. Education at Stoneyhurst and later at Oscott led to an early nomination to the diplomatic service. Periods in Athens, Constantinople and Frankfurt were followed by posts in Madrid and Paris. In this latter posting, WSB struck up a liaison with the courtesan Catherine Walters, better known as "Skittles". In 1868 WSB was posted to Buenos Aires. The following year WSB married Anne Isabella King-Noel and resigned from the diplomatic service. This was the commencement of a quite remarkable partnership. Initially the Blunts settled in Paris before moving back to England taking up residence at Newbuildings Place. After the death of WSB's elder brother, the landed estate at Crabbet Park devolved upon him. Between them Anne and WSB completely reconstructed the house, finishing the work in early 1873. In that year they made the first of their journeys to the East, travelling via Belgrade to Constantinople. The following year they travelled through the Algerian Deserts. In 1875/6 the Blunts first visited Egypt, joining a group of Bedouins and following the traditional caravan route to Cairo. In 1877/8 the Blunts made the first of their epic journeys in the Middle East travelling from Aleppo down the Euphrates to Baghdad and returning across the desert via Palmyra to Damascus and Beirut. The following year an even more adventurous journey was undertaken through the Nefud Desert to Hail (in modern Saudi Arabia) returning northwards to Baghdad and thence to Bushire on the Persian Gulf. These two great journeys were immortalised in Lady Anne's companion books 'Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates' and 'Pilgrimage to Nejd'. The customs and aspirations of Arab tribesmen were of enormous interest to the Blunts and WSB was particularly active politically. 1882 saw him organising and financing the defence of Ahmed Arabi, an Egyptian nationalist who was being prosecuted for political activities. The nationalist movement was finally defeated on the battle field of Tel-el-Kebir. WSB's support of the nationalist cause resulted in considerable friction with the British administration and with Lord Cromer. By 1888, WSB's attentions had moved to Irish Nationalism and his anti-imperialist sentiments had landed him in trouble with the British Crown. Attempting to address the citizens of Galway who among other matters were oppressed by the evictions being carried out by their English landlords, WSB found himself incarcerated in Galway Jail, later following his appeal, to finish his sentence in Kilmainham Jail in Dublin. From 1890 onwards WSB's political activities were scaled down with most winters spent in Egypt and the summers spent in England. Blunt was assiduous in keeping his friendships and acquaintances in good order and visits, shooting parties and hunting expeditions with his many friends and kinsfolk were augmented by parties at Crabbet Park. WSB founded the Crabbet Club which included such members as his kinsman, George Wyndham, Lord Curzon, Alfred Douglas and at one point, Oscar Wilde. The poetry of the Crabbet Club was subsequently printed and preserved for posterity. The other major creation of the Blunts was their stud of Arab horses which formed the Crabbet Arabian Stud. Crabbet devolved upon their daughter Judith who in 1899had married Neville Lytton, second son of Edward, first Earl of Lytton (Viceroy of India 1876-1880). WSB and Anne then lived at Newbuildings Place, near Horsham. WSB turned his hand to writing his memoirs based on a lifetime of diary-keeping. He kept in touch throughout with his many acquaintances both political and personal and took great pride in his three grandchildren, Anthony, Anne and Winifrid. One frequent visitor was the young Winston Churchill, sometimes visiting with his wife Clementine. His grandchildren recalled with great glee the days spent shooting rabbits and hares Throughout his life WSB had written poetry some of which is well known to this day. His knowledge of the Arab world was encyclopaedic and he was often consulted by the politicians of his day. He was a vigorous writer and correspondent -to his friends and foes to the press and in may publications. He was also an artist. His many liaisons with various ladies throughout his life was a source of stress to his marriage and are documented in the biography by Elizabeth Longford, ‘A Pilgrimage of Passion’. WSB and Anne became progressively estranged and at the outbreak of the First World War Anne had gone back to live at their house in Egypt where she died in 1917. WSB died at Newbuildings in September 1922. The two guns passed to Anthony, WSB’s grandson via WSB’s executor, Dorothy Carleton. In turn they were passed on to Anthony’s eldest son John (now 5th Earl of Lytton) his

* Wharton (Edith, 1862-1937). Autograph letter signed 'E. Wharton', 53 rue de Varenne, [Paris], 31st December 1910, To John, wishing him best wishes for the New Year, and the Newcastle, if he goes, 'When you wrote me that you were sending a book of Ballads which was "improper reading", my spirits rose, & I fell upon it with avidity. But on perusing L's preface I learned to my dismay that he had personally seen to it that not a line or syllable of the original subsided "which boy & maid may not read". As I fall under neither of these categories, I felt that he need not have taken so [?] trouble in my behalf; but when (at his request) I turned to the "bracketed" lines in Glasgerion & Young Hunting, & saw that "He kissed her in the red fire-light" had been substituted for language of which I dare not even think (judging from the context), I realised how thoughtful you had been in selecting for me this expurgated edition of the songs of our rude ancestors. I trouble to think what I have escaped, when such indelicate allusions are still left & though I shall always value your kindness in sending me the book, I trust you will not expect me to leave on the drawing-room table a work in which such distressing instances of female weakness are celebrated with all the fallacious charms of art. It would certainly do you no good at Newcastle if it were known that you were in the habit of sending to ladies poems in which kissing in the red fire-light is regarded as a comparatively innocent pursuit!', then asking for a letter with news and concluding if there is any chance of his going down to Rome en-route for Newcastle, 4 pp., 8vo (1)
