Lot No: 44 - Ref No: 031 Gotterey Swinscow Letterboxing Otter By Christian Allen The Letterboxing Otter is named after the late, Godfrey Swinscow who founded the Dartmoor Letterboxing 100 club. Gotterey is adorned with over 100 stamps many of which hold a special memory from letterboxers' personal collections. The activity of Letterboxing originated on Dartmoor in 1854, when James Perrott of Chagford set up a cairn at Cranmere Pool. Inside he put a glass jar where visitors who had ventured to the remote spot could leave their visiting cards. Today participants, or Letterboxers search the Tors and valleys for the hidden treasure, either following clues or simply searching under rocks. A Dartmoor Letterbox is a container - typically a durable plastic box - containing a rubber stamp, a copy of which is stamped for the collection within a journal or scrapbook. If you can find 100 'letterboxes' you can join the 100 club and earn your very own '100 club' badge! all you need is your walking gear, ink pad and journal. There is also an official Moor Otter stamp at the venue of this to get you started and a clue to a box on the moor hidden on the otter itself. Happy hunting!
