John Arthur Lomax (Manchester 1857-1923) Oil on canvas ' The Story of the Elopement ' A couple tell the new Father-in-law ( who holds a hunting whip) their tale of elopement in an Inn while other figures listen sat in front of a fire. Signed lower right 34 1/2 x 50 1/2" Lomax was known for a series of paintings illustrating the before and after of married life. This painting was turned into a popular print, two of which now now hang in the National Trust properties of Lanhydrock, Cornwall and Erddig , Wrexham. It is not now,nor ever has been re-lined! José Maria David (b.1944) French Walking Elephant Signed, stamped ``Landowski Fondeur 2013``, cast in silver no. 8/8, 21cm by 36.5cm Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist Born in the Loire Atlantique region of France, José-Maria David grew up near the Gâvre forest; one of the hunting areas frequented by the Dukes of Brittany in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This environment had a huge influence on him and caused him to be passionate about art, animals and nature. He had a career as an antique dealer until 1986, when he decided to dedicate himself to his love for sculpting animals. David has a particular skill for portraying the strength and dynamism of moving animals and is especially well regarded for his portrayals of big cats (an example of a lion on the chase ``Lion Chassant`` sold for ?255,000 at Marc-Arthur Kohn on 27th May 27, 2014, achieving a world record for the artist).
