(inner upper joint cracked). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on half title "J. Wilkes with the Author`s sincere regards", signed with initials, dated Dec. 7/83. Dr. James Wilkes (1811 - 94) F.R.C.S. was a Lunacy Commissioner between 1855 and 1878. Fellow commissioners included Robert Lutwidge, a cousin of Charles Dodgson, and Lord Shaftesbury. The Hunting of the Snark is reputed to relate to the Lunacy Commission, with Wilkes depicted as the character "Butcher". See also 1 of 5 See illustration.
