A Persian painted ivory panel decorated with hunting scene, early 20th century, of rectangular form, within Damascus inlaid frame, 31cm high x 37cm wide; together with three further painted ivory panels, early 20th century, two Persian and one depicting Mary, Joseph and Jesus, in Damascus inlaid frames, (4).

A printed notice issued by Padraig O'Ruithleis, Minister for Home Affairs [in De Valera's 'shadow' government, dated 14 March 1923, calling for 'a time of national mourning' in view of 'the murders of distinguished patriot soldiers taken prisoners in war, and the daily violation of the usages of war by the torture and ill-treatment of Republican prisoners', etc., and ordering that 'all sports and amusements be suspended, that all theatres, picture houses and other places of amusement and resort be closed, and in particular that horseracing, hunting, coursing, and all outdoor sports be discontinued.' With a cyclostyled sheet bearing an Irish version of the text , and another cyclostyled sheet bearing the English text headed 'English Translation'. All very scarce. (3)
VANITY FAIR A pair of lithographic prints depicting her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Austria in riding attire and her companion Bay Lithograph, a pair, 36 x 22cm each (2) A framed and glazed Vanity Fair portrait of the Empress Elizabeth - By C. de Grimm. Captioned "H.I.M. The Empress of Austria", it offers an informal portrait of the Empress sitting on a fence in a riding habit. Her visits to Ireland left an enduring legacy conferring international social status in the sport as well as becoming a folkloric character thanks to her fearless exploits in the saddle. Captain William George Middleton - By "T" (Chartran). Captioned "Bay" as he was universally known as "Bay Middleton" and is shown in top hat, hunting pink and boots. Celebrated as the finest huntsman of his generation, he escorted the Empress Elizabeth on her hunting holidays in Ireland at this period. He had acquired much local knowledge when serving in Ireland and put this to good use on his return to serve as A.D.C. to the Lord Lieutenant, Earl Spencer. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney

Bound in nineteenth century full mottled calf. Covers framed by a wide gilt floral roll, spine richly gilt. All edges gilt. A fine copy. Each part has its own engraved plate. The 3rd and best of the five editions as it includes an extra work "The Hunter, a discourse of horsemanship" by Gerald Langbaine. Printed by L Lichfield, Printer to the University, Oxford. These were left over sheets of the first edition published the year previous and by one of the quirks of the book trade, you will pay more for this on its own than one bound in as an extra.
