The work is considered the most important source on agricultural practices, husbandry and horticulture in the Middle Ages, including hunting, fishing, wine-making, the use of medicinal plants, animal illnesses, and a montly calendar of duties and tasks. The Bolognese nobleman and retired lawyer Crescenzi was himself a country landowner, and composed his treatise between 1304 and 1309. Following the tradition of ancient Roman agricultural writers, he divided it into twelve sections, each of which devoted to a specific topic. The Ruralia commoda enjoyed a lasting popularity in Renaissance, wre frequently reprinted in the 15th and 16th century, translated in vernacular languages, and supplemented with woodcuts. Piccole mancanze. Goldsmith R-783; Bibliotheca accipitraria 314; Hoffmann II, 4; Thiébaud 499-500.Two parts in one volume, 4° (221x144 mm). [12], 211, [1]; 120 pages. Woodcut decorated initials, head- and tail-pieces. The Parisian edition is composed by two parts, the first of which offers the texts in Greek, supplemented - in the second part - with its translation into Latin, with separate foliation and introduced by a half-title. The two parts also circulates - as this copy attests - separately. The volume opens with the De re accipitraria by the 13th-century writer and physician Demetrius Pepagomenus, here in the Latin version by Pierre Gilles (1490-1555). XIX" (DBI, s.v.).One work in 5 volumes. 8° (195x120 mm). I. [8], 321, [3] (of 19, lacking quire chi8) pages; pages 1-6 are bound between quire p2 (half-title and title-page) and quire *2 (Index); II.
