Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636-1695), A hunting still life with a pigeon, partridge, finches and a kingfisher on a stone ledge, oil on canvas, 69x59 cm, This graceful still life is exemplifying for Melchior d’Hondecoeter’s early work. The artist specialized in painting hunting still lifes, birds, poultry, and elegant landscapes with exotic birds. Following up on his Flemish predecessors, Frans Snijders (1579-1657) and Jan Brueghel II (1601-1678), d’Hondecoeter has elevated the theme of bird concerts and hunting still lifes in the Netherlands together with his cousin Jan Weenix (1641-1719).This well-balanced composition shows the qualities of d’Hondecoeter as a still life painter. The sceneis set in subtle brownish tones with, in the centre, the white wing of a pigeon, drawing our eyes into the composition. The pigeon and partridge, delicately placed on the stone ledge, dominate the painting. Yet, some smaller birds such as finches and a kingfisher are cautiously placed around them, completing the scene harmoniously. Behind the birds, some hunting equipment is visible with a large bird’s cage to the left. The very subtle muted palette and unity of the composition make this painting a typical work by one of Holland's master painters of hunting still lifes.

Lot 159

Henry Samuel Alken, Jnr, British 1810-1894- Hunting Scenes: Setting out; Taking the fence; Breaking cover; and The kill; oils on canvas, each 25 x 35.2 cm., a set of four (4). Provenance: with Arthur Ackermann & Son, London.; where purchased in June 1950. Note: We are grateful to Jamie Rountree for confirming the attribution of the present lot. Henry Samuel Alken was the eldest son of Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), and grandson of Samuel Alken Senior (1756-1815). He tended to paint in sets and usually depicted sporting scenes. Paul Mellon KBE’s collection of the artist’s original drawings, watercolours and oils was immense. Perhaps the most renowned of Henry Alken Jnr’s four paintings sets is that recording the hunt at Belvoir Castle, which was also handled by Arthur Ackermann & Son. These oils reflect the palette and feeling of the artist’s work, as well as displaying his respective strengths in capturing horses and their movement, and weaknesses in the portrayal of human faces. The owners of the country house, depicted in the left background of ‘Setting Out’, may point to the origins of the commission. It has been suggested that the house is Woburn Abbey, the family seat of the Duke of Bedford. Please refer to department for condition report

Lot 162

Dean Wolstenholme, Snr,British 1757-1837-Hunting Scenes: Setting Out; Flushing Out; On the Scent; and The Kill;oils on canvas, each 47.4 x 65.5 cm., a set of four (4).Note: The present paintings, presumably taken in or around Essex or Hertfordshire, are characteristic of Wolstenholme’s oeuvre, with the artist acting as a key figure in the development of the hunting picture, a genre which had a significant impact on the artistic landscape of 18th-century Britain. This set of four pictures exhibits the characteristics which define the artist’s distinct, somewhat stylised, approach. This is evident in the long, sinuous lines of the trees, alongside the elongated bodies of the hounds which are depicted throughout. Indeed, these exaggerated forms imbue the scenes with a palpable sense of energy and momentum. A comparable set of four oils by the artist of 'The Essex Hunt' sold at Christie's, London, 13 November 2019, lot 206 (£15,000).Please refer to department for condition report

In the present work, he effectively conveys the restrained energy of the dogs through their alert posture and their intense focus on the bird in flight. Peter Messer The Devil's Thoughts, 2022 Egg Tempera on Gesso Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Peter Messer's paintings are mostly on a domestic scale, resolutely figurative and, by implication, narrative. He paints in the historic medium of egg tempera which he prepares in the studio using egg yolk and raw pigment. The resulting paintings tend to be intense and meticulous, with a flat, arrested, deadpan quality. Often they contain wry or unsettling elements and, although the painter emphatically rejects the epithet 'quirky', it is still frequently applied. Many, though not all, draw on the fabric of Peter Messer's home town of Lewes, Sussex. Born in 1954, Peter Messer studied Fine Art at the University of Brighton and has paintings in collections in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden and the US, as well as the UK. In 2007 he published "On the Way to Work. The Lewes Paintings of Peter Messer" and, in 2021 "A Thin Place In Lewes". Education   Studied Fine Art at the University of Brighton   Select Exhibitions/Awards   His work has been often exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the New English Art Club and he has been a finalist in the Hunting, Garrick Milne, Lyn Painter-Stainers and Singer and Friedlander Prize exhibitions. In 1998 he won the Sotheby's -sponsored Chichester Art Prize and in 2000 was commissioned to provide twelve paintings for the Sussex Book of Revelations, an Arts Council Millennium Project which toured Sussex libraries. In 2004 he completed a commission for the House of Lords. Gallery Representation   The Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   A small tempera painting, the title derived from a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. The Hon Alicia Marjoribanks was the youngest daughter of David Robertson MP (of Ladykirk) and married Sir Henry Day Ingilby of Ripley Castle and Harrington Hall (Lincs) on 26th June 1862. Her father was the Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire and his portrait can still be found at Ripley. Alicias uncle Edward Robertson was appointed as a partner of Coutts Bank by Thomas Coutts in 1797. He remained partner until his death in 1836 and similarly a portrait of him also hangs at Ripley, presently in the dining room. Alicia and Henry had two children, Henry and Mary: tragically in the space of just 14 months in 1872/3 both children died of meningitis aged four and nine respectively. Shortly after this Alicias father was run over by a horse drawn bus just 7 days after being ennobled as Lord Marjoribanks of Lees. The M or L on this original box is thus very unique as it was commissioned just before his untimely passing which also saw the extinction of the title.
