Property of a Gentleman. Martin Ferdinand Quadal (1736 - 1808) Three leopards in a landscape Oil on canvas. Provenance: Private collection, France. Lot Essay: Martin Ferdinand Quadal was born in Niemtschitz in Moravia and travelled across Europe throughout his career. He studied at the Academie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna and subsequently in Paris in 1767, where he gained employment with Louis-Joseph, Prince de Conde, specialising as a painter of horses. During the 1770s his travels took him further afield and records show him working in England and Ireland and exhibiting his portraits and hunting scenes at the Royal Academy. Quadal exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1772-3, 1791, and finally in 1793. Whilst in London in 1793, he also published his own prints of 'A Variety of Tame and Wild Animals', which he made as guides for young artists in use of their own paintings and drawings. His 1779 journey to Dublin was also a success, and the Dublin Society purchased a number of his animal studies for use as study aids for students. In 1784 he travelled to Italy, stopping in Rome and Naples, amongst other cities. He appears to have visited Vienna again in 1787 and he is recorded in the Netherlands in 1794 and Hamburg in 1796. Sir Alfred James Munnings, PRA, RWS (British, 1878-1959)Jogging on signed and dated 'A. J. MUNNINGS/1912' (lower left)watercolour and bodycolour35.5 x 51cm (14 x 20 1/16in).Footnotes:Alfred Munnings arrived in Cornwall in late summer 1911, 'curious to see this country which attracted artists'1 eventually settling to live and work in the Lamorna Valley. Munnings was a great hunting enthusiast and upon arriving in Cornwall he began to ride with the Western Foxhounds. Led by Thomas Robins Bolitho, the Western was considered excellent hunting country with no wire and a plentiful supply of foxes. Hound bloodlines come from a number of the Leicestershire packs.2 Bolitho, the oldest huntsman in England at the time, having been master since 1864, was painted by Munnings on his favourite hunter, Barum, in 1920, on the occasion of his Golden Wedding Anniversary.Munnings enjoyed his days out hunting and often was inspired by what he saw, noting in his autobiography that 'Hunting became part of my life, and I saw many things on those days: bright winter sunlight on clipped horses and scarlet coats; on bare trees; stacks; on farmhouse gables; the riding out after a slight frost; the riding home with a frost beginning and a young moon in the sky; puddles already crisping over as I said good night to friends. Such were needed to freshen my mind and vision'3 This scene appears to depict hunt followers and the huntsman bringing the hounds to the meet prior to setting off. The principal rider is most likely Ned Osborne- 'simple soul, who grew into a useful combination of groom-model, and posed for many picture'4 and the scene is set in Lamorna, with the properties 'Riverside Cottage' and 'My Rosary' in the background. Munnings often used his own horses and groom as models and the central horse in the present composition was most probably the brown mare that the artist brought down from Norfolk with him when he settled in Lamorna in 1911. On this grey day, the artist used a subdued palette yet adds life and brightness by juxtaposing the scarlet of the huntsman's jacket with the close vivid hues of green making each colour more vibrant. As a result, the central figures of horse and rider, as they are also painted in sharper focus, emerge from the background. This use of optical effects was a hallmark of his style even early in his career. Although Munnings painted in watercolour during the first quarter of the 20th century, critics at the time noted his mastery of the medium. Munnings was a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters. A similar watercolour, The End of the Day depicting a head-on view of a huntsman returning home, was exhibited at National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga, New York in 1999.1Sir Alfred Munnings, An Artist's Life – Autobiography, Museum Press, London, 1950, p. 270.2Sporting Life and Sportsmen, 1925 p. 123.3 An Artist's Life, p. 258.4Ibid, p. 273. Rare. The True Lawe of Free Monarchies was first published in Edinburgh as a small octavo pamphlet in 1598, when James was King of Scotland. This octavo edition was published in London in the year James was crowned King of England. The True Lawe embodies a political theory that kindled dissension in England throughout the seventeenth century. James was not the first king to believe in his own Divine Right - Henry VIII took it for granted when he made himself Supreme Head of the English Church - but was the first to elaborate the theological case for his convictions, and to thrust them upon his subjects in print.

After William Theed (British, 1804-1891): A third quarter 19th century artificial stone bust of Achilles together with a matching pedestal en-suitethe bust and pedestal apparently unmarked, circa 1860the classical warrior modelled full face looking slightly to dexter, wearing an elaborate helmet cast with twin griffins and anthemia above a frieze of hunting hounds, the feathered plume supported by a recumbent sphinx, raised on a circular moulded socle, the pedestal of plain columnar form terminating in a moulded base, traces of later grey painted paint, the bust 84cm high, the pedestal 104cm high (2)Footnotes:The original marble bust of Achilles by William Theed was part of a commission made for Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria in 1856. The commission, costing £504 (the bill dated 14 March 1857, for 'six colossal busts after the antique supplied by William Theed') comprised 'Juno' of the Ludovico Collection in Rome, 'Aesculapius', 'Alexander of the Capitol', 'Venus of Arles' 'Roma' and 'Achilles', all of which were made to be displayed in the gallery above the grand entrance and marble hall at Buckingham Palace.Numerous attempts were made to create a new building material from the 17th century onwards with architects searching for a usable, malleable but tough substitute for stone. Coade stone, marketed by its maker Mrs Eleanor Coade as the first ever 'artificial stone', was a mix of clay, terracotta, silicates and glass which was fired for four days at a time in incredibly hot kilns. First marketed at the turn of the 1770s, it was a tough and hard-wearing material which offered new opportunities for fine-detailed decoration. Coade initially went into partnership in 1769 with Daniel Pincot who had a business making artificial stone in south London. However, the pair soon fell out and by 1771 Coade had dismissed Poncot and substituted him with the sculptor John Bacon, whose inspired designs and workmanship helped establish the Coade Artificial Stone Company as the leading firm in the field. The success of Coade stone was also aided by changing architectural taste as more architects like Robert Adam were looking for a way of applying increasingly delicate ornament to their buildings. Coade offered the most reliable way of achieving this and her stone was soon used by the leading architects of the day, including Adam, Sir William Chambers, Sir John Nash, Sir John Soane, and James Wyatt. It proved suitable not only for all sorts of architectural details, but also for monuments, sculptures, ornaments and garden furniture. By the 1840s, tastes had changed and the Coade manufactory subsequently closed its door. However numerous other factories continued to produce variants of high fired artificial stone substitutes during the subsequent decades of the 19th century and the offered bust and pedestal after a model by Theed exemplifies the Neo-Grec revival style which became fashionable in the 1860s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
