A SPANISH GOLD AND SILVER DAMESCENED IRON PAPERKNIFE, EIBAR, DATED 1875the chamfered spearpoint blade with decorated ricasso, on one side inscribed F FRONCOSO Á SU AMIGO J COOPER AÑO DE 1875, the hilt with crossguard and octagonal quillons, langets, slender grip and domed pommel with button, sheath, 26cm l (2)Dating from early in the great revival of the craft of damescening in Spain by Eusebio and Placido Zuloaga, the present dagger is modelled on a hunting knife (itself derived from the plug bayonet). This example was made in a Eibar workshop or, perhaps at the National Arms factory by a follower of the Zuloagas, several of whom resettled in Toledo in the later 1870s.
