India – Sikh Warrior Shingaar or Boar’s tooth. Rare 19th Century gilt and enamel decorated large Sikh Turban ornament. Depicting 5 lion faces characteristic of the famed symbol used by Maharajah Ranjit Singh who was also known as “Shere Punjab” or the lion of Punjab. Still retaining its original huge “jingles” and end chape. Sikh warriors were famed for their hunting skills and the Nihung sect would wear the tooth of their kill as a medallion in recognition of their hunting skills within their Dumalla turbans. No doubt this was made for a large Dumalla or conical turban known as a “Dastar Bunga” (towering fortress). Total length 19cm.
