Short Stalks: Or Hunting Camps, North, South, East, and West, 1st ed., 1892, wood-engs. and b & w illusts., near-contemp. dark green half morocco by Mudie, gilt-dec. spine with raised bands and contrasting title label, a little faded, 8vo. Includes chapters on Chamonis hunting, the Rocky Mountains, the Pyrenean Ibex and the final chapter is entitled ‘Peaks and Passes’, devoted to reminiscences of alpine climbing during the decade following the formation of the Alpine Club (1860s). HERBERT NYE (fl.1885-1927) `INDIA TIGER HUNTING p.127", signed lower right and titled lower left, oil on canvas, 58" x 75", in a gilt frame with leaf moulded bordersThere is a tear in the canvas upper right of circa 2.5" - 3", and a small puncture upper left. There is also `blooming` to the painted surface, possibly due to atmospheric conditions. There are losses to the gesso leaf mouldings on the frame.
HERBERT NYE (fl. 1885-1927) "INDIA TIGER HUNTING p.127", signed lower right and titled lower left, oil on canvas, 58" x 75"There is a tear 9" - 10" long upper right, and one or two small other punctures. Re-painted surface has `bloomed` somewhat, probably due to atmospheric storage conditions. There is also a distortion in the canvas lower left caused by the frame stretcher assembly underneath.

A High Life dagger with scabbard, together with a Japanese pocket knife and continental hunting dagger. (3) High Life dagger with some pitting to the blade, leather scabbard. The Japanese blade marked `Stopper 100`, with wooden scabbard. The hunting knife with minor blade pitting but generally all good.
Prints & engravings. A mixed collection of approx. ninety prints, mostly 18th & 19th century, including costume, royalty, erotica, nine hand coloured engravings from Robert Plot’s ‘Natural History of Staffordshire’, and three lithographs of Buffalo hunting from George Caitlin’s North American Indian series, several duplicates, various sizes and condition (approx.90).
Hooker (Joseph Dalton). A series of four autograph letters signed, ‘Jos. D. Hooker’ (and one ‘J.D. Hooker’), Kew (and last one The Camp, Sunningdale), 6th November 1865 to 11th December 1898, the first to Mrs [Archibald] Smith having just heard of the Royal Society’s award of a Royal Medal to her husband, ‘I do most heartily congratulate you on this very tardy recognition’, marginal split without loss, some spotting, black border, the second to Archie [Smith] concerning the sorrowful news on the death of his father [James Smith of Jordanhill, 1782-1867, Scottish merchant, antiquarian, architect, geologist, biblical critic and man of letters], ‘I shall never see another senior to whom I shall look up with the respect and affection that I regarded your father with. He is the last of those later filled a large space in my boyish memory and remained the same kind of warm friend to the last. ‘, 2 pp. with integral blank, the third to Mrs Smith in 1879, concerning the possibilities of a temporary dispersal of the Gordon Hill library of voyages and travels, 4 pp. with orig. stamped and postmarked envelope, the fourth also to Mrs Smith, ‘I thank you very much for sending me “Roadmaking and Sport in C.E. Africa” [by George Edward Smith, 1868-1944], which I have read with great interest and profit; for it gives me a much clearer idea of the nature of the country traversed that I had proposed and of the difficulties to be overcome by your son which called forth all his father’s energies and suppression of self in the work he had in hand. How anxious you must have been during his absence, though I hope you did not hear of his rhinoceros hunting pursuits and narrow escapes. To have two sons who spent years of active and indeed [?] service in E. Africa, and returned to tell of their labours and their adventures is not a boon granted to many parents. ‘, with a mention of [Edward] Sabine, 3 pp., black border, all 8vo. (4).

A French Model 1866 ``Chassepot`` Yataghan Sword Bayonet, the St Etienne blade dated 1874, lacks scabbard; a Steel Mace, with spiked globular head and knopped haft; a Riding Crop, bound in woven string, with heavy brass pommel and wrythen fluted tip; a Stitched Leather Bound Whip, with leather strap; a Copper Hunting Horn; a Shillelagh and a reproduction box sextant. Comprising a double edged dagger with niello decorated blade and with engraved and stained bone handle and matching scabbard with brass tip cover, length 16.25 inches (41 cm). An engraved and nielloed double bladed dagger with scabbard, length 14.25 inches (36 cm) and a Indo Persian nielloed dagger with hunting motifs and Islamic inscription on handle lacking scabbard, length 14.25 inches (36 cm).
A PAIR OF INDO PERSIAN DAGGERS. The first with ornate rams head pommel on handle and velvet covered scabbard, length 14 inches (35.5 cm). The second ornately repousséd overall with scenes of tigers and other felines hunting various animals and with a tiger head pommel devouring a creature. The ricasso engraved with animals. Length 11.75 inches (30 cm).
A CAPODIMONTE HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN COVERED TWO HANDLED CUP AND LIDDED DRESSER BOX, CIRCA 1900. The cup decorated with a centaur and kentauride and scrolled handles with satyr masked terminals, raised on a bell form pedestal base and surmounted with a bacchanalian embossed cover. The oval dresser box with hinged gilt bronze mounted lid, finely painted and embossed with a countryside hunting scene. Each marked with blue crown over N under glaze. Largest height 6.5 inches (16.5 cm).
